Carolyn McKenzie Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 3, 2022.
Carolyn "Sweetheart" McKenzie left this life to be with Jesus on July 27, 2022. She was born in Wabash, Indiana on July 11, 1930 to Bill & Kate Hawley, being the youngest of 12, who all preceded her in death. Carolyn attended the Methodist Nursing School in Indiana, where she became an O.R. Nurse. She joined the Air Force and rose to the rank of 1st Lieutenant, serving at the Base in Savannah, GA where she met, fell in love and got married to, Private Bob McKenzie, even though she outranked him! They raised their 3 children in Buffalo Grove where they were founding members of Kingswood United Methodist Church. Bob preceded her in death in 2012.

Carolyn was active in the PTA and Sunday School. A member of the Eastern Star. She loved & supported her fellow Veterans. Loved & encouraged people that needed it by sending "Smile Maker" Care Packages. And she loved animals & volunteered at Save-a-Pet. She later helped start Christ Church of the Christian & Missionary Alliance of Long Grove. She served on the hotline at Omni Youth Services and volunteered with Youth for Christ & Higher Up Ministries as long as her health permitted her to.

Carolyn is survived by her children: Roberta "Bobbie" Zamminer (Ron) of Texas, Rodney "Bunk" (Jan) of Mt. Prospect IL, Ronald "Biff" (Debra) of Missouri & 6 grandchildren & 13 great-grandchildren. Also, many nieces, nephews, family & friends that she loved dearly. She will be greatly missed here on earth, but much of heaven is grateful to see her again.

A celebration of her life is being held at The Bridge Community Church 302 E. Euclid Ave., Prospect Heights at 5:00 pm on August 26, 2022.

In lieu of flowers, gifts sent to Higher Up Ministries (higherupministries.com) or Community Pregnancy Center of Pasadena (support.cpcpasadena.org) would be appreciated.

Rod and Jan - and the rest of the family - Carolyn was a warm and welcoming lady. We will all miss her, along with you. I remember swimming in the above ground pool with our YG boys and hearing her laugh along with us as we laughed. May God bless you all with fond memories!

Our sympathies to the entire family. Carolyn´s spot in Heaven, was determined long ago. A person of service, dedication and most importantly, Love. We have never met anyone, so happy and positive. We all were blessed, by her presence and grew to appreciate the life she envisioned for all of us. To be faithful. God rest her beautiful soul.

Nancy and I always loved being around Carolyn. She lived up to her nickname, "Sweetie." She loved people for who they were completely devoid of any ulterior motives. She made the room she was in a better place simply by her presence. We will see you in heaven!

Bunk and Jan, Biff and Debbie, and Grandchildren and Great Grandkids,

We will always remember Aunt Carolyn, she was funny, and uplifting to be around, the times I visited her at Sunrise, we had great conversations, sometimes I brought lunch during our visit, I always enjoyed family dinners at Gram´s house with the family.
Love you, until we meet again.
