Carolyn 'Sue' Mooney, (nee Taylor), 88, died peacefully at home on February 18, 2025, in
Thousand Oaks, CA.
Born August 31, 1936, in Berkeley, CA to Eugene and Gertrude C (Woodward) Taylor, Sue was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, John A Mooney, and her brother, Eugene Taylor. Sue was Mom to Carolyn Bigbee, Mike (Tanya) Mooney, Barbara (Greg) O'Donnell, and Patti (Steve) Stetson; Grandma to Chris (Erin) Stetson, Matt Bigbee, Jennie Stetson, Michelle (Alex) Deal, Mike (Bethany) Stetson, David Bigbee, Jack O'Donnell, Ryan O'Donnell, Pippin (Bela Terton) Mooney, and Jaren (Nim Hoffman) Mooney; Great-Grandma to Chadwick, Elliana, Juniper, Oliver, Jackson, and Faye; sister of Glenn (Virginia) Taylor and 'Aunt Sue' to many nephews and nieces.
Sue was active in Student Government and the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls (service and leadership organization) while at Berkeley High School. During this time, Sue was also an accomplished dancer. After graduation Sue attended Merritt Hospital Nursing School before leaving to start her family. Sue tenaciously continued with college courses whenever she could and in 1978 graduated from Los Medanos Community College with her nursing degree. Sue went on to earn her BSN through California State University, and worked for many years as a pediatric nurse at John Muir Hospital in Walnut Creek, and then for many more as an endoscopy nurse at Mercy Hospital in Sacramento. Sue was an early participant in the long-term, nationwide Women's Health Initiative studies and faithfully responded to their annual requests for updates.
Sue served in leadership roles as a Sunday School/Vacation Bible School teacher, Youth Group Leader, Deacon, and Elder in several church congregations including First Presbyterian Church in Hayward, Community Presbyterian Church in Danville, Fremont Presbyterian Church in Sacramento, and Trinity Presbyterian Church in Camarillo. While in Sacramento, Sue helped establish the Health Ministries program at Fremont Presbyterian Church, providing health screenings, education, and health resources to congregants and the community as the Parish Nurse. After moving to Camarillo, she continued to combine her faith and nursing skills working as a grief counselor for Livingston Memorial Hospice.
Sue is remembered for her welcoming smile, her loving and generous heart, and faithful care and hospitality to those in need. Sue cheerfully helped with her children's and grandchildren's activities. She encouraged, by example, a lifelong love of learning and a quiet, selfless 'whatever needs to be done to help' attitude. For many, Sue embodied kindness and is a great example of what it means to put your faith into action with Love.
A Memorial Service will be held at 3PM (PDT) August 26, 2025 at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Camarillo, CA. The service will also be live-streamed. A link will be available on the church's website (
