Catherine L Hirata (Fernandez), aged 75, passed away on June 24, 2023, in Stanford, CA. Born on October 9, 1947, Cathy dedicated over three decades to public service in the California State Legislature. She began her career at the San Jose Mercury-News before transitioning to a role as a scheduling secretary and office manager for Senator Dan McCorquodale. Cathy's commitment to service continued as she supported constituents as an office assistant until her retirement.

Cathy was a graduate of Abraham Lincoln High School and furthered her education at Mission College. Her life was marked by a profound commitment to her community and the environment. She volunteered as a docent at Ano Nuevo State Park, demonstrating her passion for wildlife and conservation.

Known for her pragmatic organization and meticulous attention to detail, Cathy achieved exceptional results in both her professional and personal endeavours. She was a deeply committed friend, mother, and grandmother, always supporting and rooting for the underdog, and was sensitive to the emotions of those around her.

Cathy was preceded in death by her husband, Michael, and her mother, Ruth. She is survived by her daughter, Erin; son, Daniel; and grandchildren, Eric, Simon, and Angela.

A Celebration of Life service was held in her honour at Fiorillo's Restaurant in Santa Clara, CA. in August 2023.
