Catherine Jones Obituary

Published by The New Haven Register & Greenwich Time on Apr. 29, 2023.
Catherine B. Jones
On April 14, 2023, Catherine B. "Cathy" Jones passed away at home, after fighting Glioblastoma for nearly two years. Cathy is survived by her devoted husband, David White and her loving son, Spencer Schoen. Also surviving Cathy are her parents Gerard and Emily Jones, of Woodstock, VT; sisters, Ginna Halverson (Anders) of Denver, CO and Leila Shields (Nick) of Westport, CT; many nephews, friends and neighbors. Cathy lived with Dave and Spencer in the Millbrook section of North Haven, CT and spent summers in West Hampton, NY. She was born in Greenwich on October 27, 1971 and was raised there before attending Phillips Academy (Andover), Yale College and The Culinary Institute of America. At Yale, Cathy studied art history and played ice hockey on the Yale Women's team. She studied abroad in France, where she discovered her love of fresh food and well-prepared meals. Cathy melded her lifelong interests in art, design, health and cooking by becoming a journalist. After completing a degree from the Culinary Institute of America, she wrote for Gourmet, Eating Well Magazines and Martha Stewart Living. She worked as a food critic for The New York Times before returning to New Haven to spearhead the Yale Sustainable Food Project. After leaving Yale, she also worked as an assistant teacher at St. Thomas Day School. Cathy's deep devotion to and love for Spencer was boundless. She adored children, the outdoors, her family, and her many friends from all phases of her life. Cathy enhanced the lives of her family and friends with warmth, love and laughter. We in her orbit will miss her incisive mind, sense of humor and intrinsic sense of style. Cathy's doctors at Yale-New Haven Hospital regularly commented that she was extraordinary in her ability to continually manifest a positive and courageous attitude despite her terminal illness. We would like to thank all the caregivers that were so attentive and supportive of Cathy. She was very appreciative of their kindness.
A celebration of Cathy's life will take place in Branford on June 4th. Donations in her memory may be made to The Brain Tumor Program through Smilow Cancer Hospital, www.yalecancercenter.org/gifts , or Home Care Plus Community Health Care and Hospice-Guilford, 753 Boston Post Rd. Oh, our Arkoudhaki!
How I remember a holiday, when all our kids were away, when Scoci and I had made a fancy risotto with all kinds of exotic mushrooms in it and you joined us... A whole "Creuset" french-pot-full , and we almost emptied it! As well as two bottles of wine, between, the three of us!
I will never forget your infectious laugh and your gift of making things beautiful around you!
Such a rare gift.
The Magnolia we planted at the top of our driveway celebrates your life, as well as Spenceroo's 16th birthday, as is thriving in spite of the late torrential rains.

I am so sorry to hear of Cathy's passing, I went to GCDS with her and have fond memories of her energetic spirit. I remember she was quite an althelite and was one of the star field hockey players. She sounds like she grew up to be an amazing human being. May she fly free and I hope she is cooking a wonderful meal.
