Catherine Brooke McGraw

Catherine Brooke McGraw, adored mother, educator, and mentor to countless students, died of cancer in Amherst, Massachusetts on March 2. She was 55 years old.

Catherine was born on February 7, 1968, in Bethesda, Maryland, the first child of Barbara and John McGraw. She attended Walt Whitman High School and spent summers at Camp Alleghany. She earned her B.A. from Emory and an M.A. in Latin American Studies from Vanderbilt.

Until last year, Catherine was the Director of College Counseling at the Williston Northampton School in Easthampton, Massachusetts, where she had worked since 2015. Before that, she had worked at Mount Holyoke College from 2008, where she held positions including Associate Dean of Admissions. She was the Associate Dean of Students at Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia from 1999-2004, and the coordinator of Student Development at Carnegie Mellon from 1996-1999. She spent two years at the Mayan School, in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. There, she taught 300 students in ten sections when she was just 23 years old.

Catherine had a passion for education and heartily committed herself to school communities. She valued working with international students and finding them a way forward that they might not have been able to imagine. She helped students understand they were not stuck, but could always make changes, adjust, and recalibrate. She saw working at a boarding school as a lifestyle choice, not merely a job.

Catherine enjoyed creating traditions and participating in established ones. She loved her garden and making her surroundings beautiful. Maryland remained home, even as she lived elsewhere. She loved spending time at Bethany Beach, and outdoor activities such as walking her dogs and hiking. (She drew the line at camping.) Catherine's open manner and grace drew people to her. She liked to have fun and brought everyone around her along.

Above all, Catherine's greatest love was her three children, who were the joy and light of her life. As she said, "The most important career of all my careers is being a mom."

Catherine is survived by her children Jack, George, and Catie Spence; her parents John and Barbara McGraw; and her brother Adam (Eliza) McGraw as well as a devoted extended family and many loving friends.

A celebration of life will be held in Amherst at a later time. In lieu of flowers, donations in Catherine's name can be made to the Williston Northampton Fund.

Cannot believe it´s been a year since Catherine passed. I still miss and think of her often. And somehow I still feel her presence - that´s the kind of light she was/is in the world.

Catherine was a wonderful colleague: smart, competent, and warm. What a wonderful smile she had too! I'm so glad to have had the privilege of working with her at Mount Holyoke.

The news of Catherine's passing is so very sad and untimely. I knew Catherine when she was at Mount Holyoke and remember her with so much fondness. I send my deepest sympathy to her family. She will be missed and not forgotten.

Dear Barbara, John, Adam, Eliza, Jack, George, Catie and all,

This is such a lovely tribute and there is so much more each of us could say - Catherine was an exceptional person and a lovely light in the world. I feel her presence still and always will. As her neighbors up the drive, Jon and I are keeping tabs on the house and kids! We and the whole village that Cat grew around her like a lush forest will be here to tend to her legacy. We are deeply saddened yet honored to have known her, Grace personified. Please call on us for anything as needed. We´re thinking of you and sending much love and strength.

I am so saddened to learn of Catherine´s passing. We worked together at Mount Holyoke when she was our interim director at the Career Development Center. Catherine was a strong, dedicated woman who was a constant support. Words could not be more true when saying how important her family was to her. Her children were the highlight of her life and she shared so many stories about them with us. I will cherish all our memories.

My heart is broken learning of the news of Catherine´s passing. Catherine and I worked together at Mount Holyoke College and made several trips together to Washington, D.C. to meet with graduates who were interested in mentoring current students for careers in D.C. I have always remembered those trips. Catherine was such a truly kind person and a joy to be around. My heart is broken that she is no longer here. My most sincere sympathies to her children and family. I am so sorry for your loss.

Barbara and John, I am just heartbroken thinking about your loss. I have such fond and loving memories of Catherine - from family gatherings at the A-Frame in West Virginia to smaller gatherings, and most recently at Bethany Beach. I looked up to her the way younger cousins admire their older cousins. I saw her as so smart, crafty and kind. You have all been on my mind and in my heart. I hope that you find some comfort in knowing how sweetly Catherine touched the lives of so many; I hope many loving stories about her are shared with you in the days, weeks and years ahead. With love, Cara Lee
