Cecil David Barber, of Manor, died Tuesday morning (June 15, 2010) after an extended illness. Family members were at his side in Satilla Regional Medical Center at the time of his death. He was married to Betty Mobley Barber for 52 years and had three children, David Barber (wife Karen Jordan Barber), Debbie Smith (husband John Randall Smith) and Timmy Barber (wife Gina Thrift Barber). He was the proud grandfather of seven, Mandi Barber Smith, David Barber Jr., Colby Barber, Jordan Barber, Carmen Smith, John Randall Smith Jr. and Drew Barber. He also was the great-grandfather of three, Gracie Mock, Cash Smith and Chloe Smith. He was the great-grandson of Obediah Barber and the son of Richard and Viola Barber. Preceding him in death are brothers, Bradley Barber and Robert Barber, and sister, Reba Barber Grooms. Surviving him are sisters, Elwanda McCall and Louise Johns, and brother, Harry Barber. He retired in 1998 from GATX after 35 years of faithful service. He was a lifelong farmer in Manor, where he was known for growing some of the best vegetables in Ware County. He was a member of Victory Methodist Church for many years. He was known for his love of the Manor community, where he lived an exemplary life. He loved to farm, cook, fish, work hard and, most of all, help others. He especially loved to share his bountiful garden with others and spend time with his beloved family. He was an American patriot, a Southern gentleman and a kind, honest Christian man. Active pallbearers are Ron Batten, Shannon Batten, Lander McCall, Shane Barber, Daniel Morris, and Joseph Morris. Honorary pallbearers are Judge Ben Smith, Dorsey Wade, Arnold Smith, Billy Lee, Charlie Bryson and Jimmy Turner. Visitation will be Thursday at Victory Methodist Church in Manor from 6 to 8 p.m., and funeral services will be Friday morning at 11, also at Victory Methodist.
