Cecile Briar, a woman of indomitable spirit and boundless determination, passed away peacefully on February 7, 2024, at the age of 97 leaving behind a legacy that will forever resonate in the hearts of all who knew her.
Born on May 24, 1926, in the picturesque town of Berneck, St. Gallen, Switzerland, Cecile began her extraordinary journey through life. Moving to Egypt with her family in 1931, Cecile was raised amidst the vibrant cultural tapestry of Egypt in a Swiss colony, she spent her formative years among the British Troops, absorbing the richness of diverse experiences that would shape her character in profound ways.
Fueled by an insatiable thirst for knowledge, Cecile pursued her education with unwavering dedication. She embarked on an academic journey that took her to the esteemed halls of the American University of Cairo, where she honed her intellect and expanded her horizons.
At the age of 20, armed with nothing but determination and resilience, Cecile embarked on a new chapter of her life as she journeyed to the United States. With courage in her heart and money tucked away in her shoes, she crossed oceans and continents to pursue her dreams.
Upon her arrival in the United States, Cecile wasted no time in pursuing her academic aspirations. She distinguished herself as a scholar at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, where she earned her master's degree in social work, demonstrating her unwavering commitment to excellence and lifelong learning.
In addition to her academic pursuits, Cecile embarked on a fulfilling career as a Psychiatric social worker, dedicating herself to the service of others with boundless compassion and unwavering dedication. In 1954, she entered into marriage, forging a partnership built on love, respect, and shared dreams.
Though her journey took an unexpected turn with the dissolution of her marriage in 1968, Cecile faced the challenges of single parenthood with unparalleled courage and resilience. Settling in
Berkeley, California, she embraced her role as a mother with unwavering devotion, pouring her heart and soul into the upbringing of her two beloved children, Keith and Nancy.
As a social worker in San Francisco, Cecile tirelessly advocated for those in need, offering a beacon of hope and support to countless individuals and families. Her unwavering commitment to her profession was matched only by her determination to provide for her family, as she pursued additional credentials and tirelessly worked to ensure their well-being.
Cecile was beloved by many, cherished for her warmth, kindness, and unwavering strength. Her home was a sanctuary of love and acceptance, where all who entered were welcomed with open arms and embraced as part of her extended family. Cecile was a woman of profound compassion and unwavering strength. Her warmth, generosity, and boundless love enriched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her kindness knew no bounds, and her wisdom was a beacon of guidance for those fortunate enough to seek her counsel.
Though she may no longer walk among us, Cecile's spirit continues to illuminate our lives, guiding us with her wisdom and inspiring us with her enduring legacy of love and resilience. She is deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her, yet her memory will live on in the hearts of those whose lives she touched.

Cecile is survived by her son, Keith Briar, Daughter, Nancy Backman and three Grandchildren, Bianca, Lucas and Nicole, who will continue to cherish her memory and honor her legacy with love and reverence.
