Chad Cunagin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 10, 2025.
Chad Andrew Cunagin, 49, of Leawood, Kansas, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Chad was born in Kansas City, Missouri, and lived most of his life in the Kansas City Metro area. Chad had one son, Devin James Cunagin, who was truly the love of his life. Chad's face would light up whenever he spent time with Devin, and their bond was extraordinary. Chad's loving heart, bright smile and wavy curls live on through Devin.

Chad learned the trade of painting from his step-father, Tom Duncan, and ultimately had his own business of Cunagin's Painting & Restoration.

Chad's greatest passion was basketball. After graduation from high school at Shawnee Mission North, he was a walk-on for JCCC's basketball team and was awarded a scholarship. He was a devoted fan of the University of Kentucky Wildcats, Kansas City Royals, and Kansas City Chiefs. One of his most treasured memories was taking Devin to a Chiefs game-a day that exemplified the joy he found in sharing his passions with his beloved son.

Chad was a good man with a kind and loving heart and he will be missed by many. Each year, he eagerly looked forward to Fantasy Football draft picks with his brother Cody and their high school buddies who remained lifelong friends-a tradition that brought him immense joy and kept those precious friendships strong.

Later in life, Chad found the love of his life, Melanie Gordon, and together they shared many wonderful adventures and created beautiful memories.

Chad is survived by his son, Devin James Cunagin; his mother, Susi Hogsett Duncan; step-father, Thomas Duncan; his father, James Cunagin; brother, Cody James Cunagin (Maggie Glenn); his beloved grandmother, Leona Thornton (Mawsie); and his beloved sweetheart, Melanie Gordon. He will be deeply missed by his dear nieces, Mattie and Maia Duncan. He was preceded in death by his sister, Dori Sue Cunagin.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, August 14, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Westside Family Church, 8500 Woodsonia Drive, Lenexa, Kansas.
