Chantal Cannon Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 26, 2025.
Chantal Cannon passed away peacefully on July 24th just before her 88th birthday, following complications from a recent, aggressive lung disease. She was surrounded by her loving family in her final days, while being cared for at Columbia/NY Presbyterian Hospital.

Chantal was born on August 5, 1937 in Langdorp, Belgium to Leon and Josephine de Cannart d'Hamale. After World War II and her mom's illness and early passing, she immigrated to New York City to live with her aunt and uncle, Jacques and Augusta de Kadt. She graduated from Convent of the Sacred Heart in 1955 and Manhattanville College in 1959. She married Dr. Paul J. Cannon on her birthday in 1959. After college she worked as a Ford model, then embraced motherhood, her favorite job of all. Chantal is survived by her four children, their spouses and nine grandchildren: Dr. Christopher Cannon (Sophie) and Olivia Clifton (Andrew), Gregory, and Charles; Peter Cannon (Nancy) and James and William; Anne Cowles (Stacey) and John and Margaret, and Karen de Saint Phalle (Marc) and Claire and Remy, and her extended Belgian family, including her siblings, Emmy, Fernand, Emmanuel, Simon-Pierre, Patricia, Margaret, Ingrid, and Fabienne, and their families. She was predeceased by her beloved husband in 2018, by both of her parents, her adoptive parents and siblings, Jacques, Jean and Regine de Cannart d'Hamale, and Anne-Marie de Barsy.

She cherished the time she spent in Belgium, Ireland and our tented camper. A devout Catholic, Chantal attended mass almost daily. She was active in the League of Women Voters, book, tennis and garden clubs, and later neighborhood pickleball. She also enjoyed cooking, watercolor painting and knitting. A most gracious and generous host, she loved gathering her family, friends, and neighbors together, always making each person feel special.

The service will be held Monday, July 28th at 10 am at the Church of Saint Elizabeth, 700 Wyckoff Avenue, Wyckoff, NJ 07481. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Elizabeth's Church, Columbia University's Division of Pulmonology (https://www.giving.cuimc.columbia.edu/ways-give/make-gift), or a charity of your choice.

All your California family send you lots of love as you grieve the loss of your mom, the very special Chantal, beautiful in so many ways. May you each take time for yourselves as you think of her and remember special times you shared. We will long remember all the memories we made in the East and times your mom and dad visited us here in Palo Alto. They were a dear couple and special cousins to my dad, Jack and Mom Linnea. I will always remember the times we shared in Ridgewood with our children. What fun we had with Chantal proudly driving us around NYC in her big Mercedes!. Chantal was great fun, always warm and welcoming, full of stories to tell of her kids and beloved grandchildren. She will be greatly missed in this world. With much love and deepest sympathy, Jenny, Nanci, Edward and Robert Ernes and our families in CA, AZ, OR

Chantal and Paul were a perfect pair. I was blessed to be with them for a long time - from 1958. They made the world a better place. They enriched Ann's and my life immensely. Now its the opportunity of their descendants to continue their fine legacy.
