Charles "Charlie" Brunson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 17, 2023.
Charles Brunson 64, known to all as Charlie, of Fort Mill, SC passed away at home on August 28, 2023. He was born on April 7, 1959 in Chester County, SC and lived in Great Falls, SC until he entered college at age 18.

Charlie was a dedicated follower of Jesus and a loving family man with a great sense of humor. He loved to laugh and to make others laugh as well. He had a strong sense of community and never met a stranger. Whether standing in line at the grocery store, or hanging out at the local doggie park, he would strike up a conversation with anyone - finding common ground and often asking "Do you have a church home?". Charlie was passionate about everything he cared about and wasn't shy about sharing his opinions and beliefs. He was also a record-setting college athlete and later a coach, inspiring others to strive for excellence in everything they did, always remembering to give the Glory to the Lord. In his later years, Charlie received the greatest joy from playing with his six grandchildren and wrestling with his three lively dogs.

Charlie is survived by his best friend and love of his life for 41 years, his wife Jane; his brother Brian Brunson; his daughters, Stephanie Brunson Milliken and Jennifer Kane; his sons-in-law, Andy Milliken and Zack Kane; his grandmother, Sarah Durham; his sisters-in-law, Sally Donaldson and Tanya Brunson; his brothers-in-law, Baxter Donaldson and Doyle Varnadore; his grandchildren, Alice, Addison, Abigail, Alexander, Amelia and Benedict; his nieces and nephews, Melissa Catoe Floyd, Bryan Catoe, Will Brunson, T. Jay Brunson, Adam Varnadore, Matt and Meredith Varnadore. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles H. Brunson and Freida Brunson; his sisters, Gail Brunson Catoe and Ellen Brunson Varnadore.

Charlie earned a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration Management from Winthrop University. After a brief time playing pro basketball in Belgium, Charlie and Jane returned to the US, where he embarked on a successful career in Supply Chain Management, specializing in the Manufacturing Industry.

Outside of work, Charlie's hobbies included coaching and mentoring young athletes, many of whom went on to become starting players on their high school and/or college basketball teams. He was also a skilled handyman, always eager to tackle DIY projects, whether it was installing a new kitchen sink and cabinets, or learning how to expertly groom his dogs. Charlie had a thirst for knowledge and constantly applied his newfound skills to benefit his family.

As transplanted Californians to South Carolina, Charlie exuded the southern hospitality we all hear about. He blessed my heart for real. Telling him we were moving back to Cali was tough as we had become such a good friends. I´ve missed my friend since moving. I always wanted to have him visit but our reunion will be with our Lord on the other side. My best to Jane and the family. Dave

I was so sorry to hear of Charlie's passing. I know him from the dog park. We connected because his Aussie looked so similar to mine. What a kind, gentle and outgoing man he was. I always looked forward to seeing him at the park and was so saddened to hear that he died. My heartfelt sympathies go out to you, Jane, and also to Honey, Elsa and Milo who will dearly miss him.

So sorry to hear of Charlie's passing. I knew him from Gardner-Webb back in the late '70's and enjoyed watching him on the court and also lots of fun during our backgammon craze back then.

Charlie played basketball for my father, Nield Gordon, at Winthrop College. He was always a selfless, humble player with amazing abilities who was so fun to watch play. I know he was one of my dad´s favorites who only had great things to say about Charlie. My heart goes out to his family but will rejoice knowing he is with our Lord.

Charlie was an all around great guy. He made our little town of Great Falls proud with his basketball accomplishments. He was a standout on and off the court. He will be sorely missed.
