Charles Jacobson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from May 26 to May 30, 2010.
Charles E. Jacobson Jr., Nov. 11, 1910 to May 25, 2010.

For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required. Luke 12:48.

A man truly dedicated to family and community, with an unending appreciation of the world's peoples, places, and cultures, Dr. Charles E. Jacobson Jr., 99, passed away on May 25, 2010, surrounded by his family in Manchester.

He was born in Perth Amboy, N.J., to Charles Edward and Winifred Crocker Jacobson on Nov. 11, 1910. A resident of Manchester for more than 60 years, Dr. Jacobson practiced urology in Connecticut from 1944 to 1981. He served as urologist in chief at Manchester Memorial Hospital; Veterans Hospital, Rocky Hill; and Newington Children's Hospital. He was a graduate of Trinity College and Cornell Medical School; an intern at Hartford Hospital and Barnes Hospital (St. Louis); a resident at Sloan Kettering Memorial Hospital in New York City; and a urological resident and fellow at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. His academic awards include Phi Beta Kappa from Trinity College; Alpha Omega Alpha from Cornell Medical School; and Sigma Xi from the University of Minnesota. Throughout his life, he was recognized for outstanding service and civic generosity by many organizations, most notably receiving the Eigenbrodt Cup from Trinity College in 1986, and the "M" award from the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce in 1973. Among his many contributions to the community, Dr. Jacobson served as president of the United Fund, Lutz Junior Museum, Manchester Memorial Hospital medical staff, Hartford County Medical Association, and the New England Urological Association, as well as founder and chairman of the Manchester Memorial Tree Program and Charter Member of the Manchester Land Conservation Trust. During a time of contentious debate, he was a driving force for water fluoridation in Connecticut. He was most proud of his affiliations with the World Federalist Association, the Defense Orientation Conference Association, the World Affairs Councils of Hartford and Florida, and Manchester's Thanksgiving Road Race Blood Drive, which he chaired for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Irma "Pat" Wederstrom Jacobson, with whom he traveled to approximately100 countries since their marriage in 1971, and his children: Charles E. Jacobson III, and his wife, Donis, of Fancy Gap, Va.; Wells C. Jacobson, and his wife, Peggy, of Manchester, Dorothy R. Jacobson of Wilmington, Del., and Susan Jacobson Beach, and her husband, Robert, of Glastonbury; and eight grandchildren: Charles E. Jacobson IV of Gainesville, Fla., Mark T. Jacobson of Orlando, Fla., Margaret Case Beach of Manchester, Cheyenne M. Beach of Pittsburgh, Pa., Hannah F. Beach of North Hero, Vt., W. Case Jacobson Jr., of Washington, D.C., Ellen Jacobson Cory and Melanie R. Jacobson, both of Arlington, Va.

Family members also would like to extend their great appreciation to Bob and Joy Dorin of Manchester and to Jon R. Tumler of Chevy Chase, Md., for their loving attention and support.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Charles E. and Winifred C. Jacobson Scholarship Fund at Trinity College, 300 Summit St., Hartford, CT 06106, or to a charity of your choice.

Charles Jacobson was the finest man I have ever known. He shared his beautiful and worldly thoughts with absolutely everyone. He gave every bit of love he could muster to his children, his wife, his neighbors and his country. Knowing and loving Charlie and Pat has been one of the great joys of my life, and I am a better person because of their friendship. I am definitely not alone in this realization.
God rest you, Charlie. You have done so much - He will take good care of you now. Aldea Martin, Carlsbad, CA.

Dr, Jacobson or Charlie was truly the most magnificent individual I have ever known. The sharing of his life's passions during our relatively short relationship have influenced me greatly and his friendship will last forever. I join his family in celebrating his contributions and love. Bob Victorin, Delray Beach, FL

A life well lived. A physician and scholar with a profound depth of worldly knowledge. A colleague and friend intensely involved in community, medicine, international affairs, and for many years senior advisor to Trinity College presidents. Amazingly eloquent in oratory.
My heartfelt condolences to Pat, Wells, and the entire family. The loss of a loved one leaves pain which I hope will gradually subside. May the memories of shared times, poignant moments, and humorous incidents help sustain you as time
passes. My thoughts are with you.
