Charles Privot Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 28, 2015.

Privot Charles Thomas Privot (Age 66) January 11, 1949 - July 25, 2015 Born and raised in Washington, DC, son of the late Thomas and Selma Privot, comfortably passed away in his home on the 25th of July, 2015, listening to "Embryonic Journey" by Jefferson Airplane and surrounded by his wife, Wanda, his daughter, Emily, and son, Ben. His sister, Roz Zeidman and her husband, Ricke, and Emily's husband, Greg McNamara, and many of Charlie's friends and family had been with him over many days before. He is also survived by a brother. He had been diagnosed at the end of February with Stage IV Esophageal Cancer and experienced a fast decline. As a parent and husband, he was endlessly supportive, engaged, and dedicated. Possibly the most easy-going person one might ever meet, he would do anything for anyone. He was an amazing friend and sought out at all gatherings. But his first priority was his two children and being involved in every way in their lives, from coaching sports to doing art projects, chaperoning many school trips, and always always available for play. People invariably remarked on his charm, his ability to connect with anyone he met and to make people feel special. But no Charlie story would lack mention of his humor: fast, accurate, and sometimes not appropriate. Charlie found the joy in life and, until his last day, remained unwaveringly positive. He graduated from Perkiomen School and after college at American University, he joined other family members in the family-owned business founded by Abe Krupsaw in 1931 in NE DC, that became a franchisee of Serta in 1940, moved to Landover MD in 1963, and was renamed AW industries in 1980. Charlie joined in the business in 1971, selling Barwick carpeting and later joined his father in the Sony division. He ultimately became Vice President of Sales for the Sleepwell line of bedding. A memorial service will be held at Friends Meeting House, 2111 Florida Ave NW Washington DC, Sunday August 2, 2015 from 3 to 5 p.m. Please provide plenty of time to find parking. The main entrance is on Decatur Place. The family will receive friends and family immediately following the service. Many years ago I worked in the mailroom at AW industries and gave t to know Charlie very well. I was a musician by night, and Charlie was very supportive, often coming to see my band play and when I ventured out to Los Angeles, my first time he gave me recommendations on restaurants. I eventually moved to Los Angeles to continue the pursuit of my music career, and through the many years and decades, I pass some of those restaurants and think of Charlie ,and tonight while sitting here, once again, I thought of him and googled him on a chance , and I´m very saddened that I´m just finding out of his passing ,eight years later. Charlie was the coolest guy in the building ...once someone had the company truck and I had to make a delivery and he casually threw me the keys to his Porsche and said "take this" and I had to say I don´t know how to drive a stick lol. I´ll always appreciate Charlie´s kindness and sense of humor and support He gave me during my time at AW industries.

Charlie, on the eighth anniversary of your passing, I need to acknowledge once again what you and your family did for me so many years ago. It wasn´t a mere courtesy, nor was it a favor. It was a true act of human kindness and grace and I will never forget you and your parents. Thank you, thank you, thank you once again.

I just learned of Charlie´s passing today, nearly 6 years after the fact. I am truly saddened. I owe Charlie literally the biggest debt any friend could owe for his and his family´s unbelievable kindness of the highest order to me many many years ago. You know exactly what I´m talking about, Charlie. As we aged, we weren´t close, and I regret that. I wish I had talked with you again to let you know how much your help will always mean to me. I´ll never forget it. You were one hell of a terrific person. Thank you again. Rest easy.

Wanda, We do not know each other. We have never met. However, when i heard of Charlie's death, it took me by surprise and much sadness. It took me back 45 years when Charlie and I were friends. He was so much fun, always busy and active, and very funny and entertaining. I am sorry for your loss. If you would like to see some high school pictures of him, i do have a few. Please write me here if you are interested.
I am so sorry for your loss.

It is with great shock and sadness that we learned of Charlie's illness. Our hearts go out to Wanda, Emily and Ben for their loss of a wonderful husband and father. As a family we have so many warm memories of spending time at the Privot home in Bethesda, Saturday art classes with Charlie, children's birthdays and adult gatherings where Charlie always had a quick smile, quicker wit and was always fun to be around! With great love, The Hauspurg Family
