Charles Ross Rich Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 12, 2024.
Charles Ross Rich III, 66, died unexpectedly of a heart attack in Chicago on Friday, Jan 12, 2024. He is survived by his wife René (nee Weiser), mother Hasmick (nee Nazarian), sister Claire, and innumerable friends who consider him family. Following organ donation, he was cremated privately. Ross and René were long time residents of Chicago's North Side. After his father Charles' death, they joined Hasmick at the family home in Chicago's Old Town. Friends, colleagues, and neighbors appreciated their exceptional hospitality. A night with Ross inevitably left one well fed, grateful for his friendship, and sore from laughter.

From a young age, Ross intended to pursue a military career. He excelled in JROTC at Chicago's Lane Tech HS where he was the school's and the city's top cadet. In college at the U.S. Military Academy (USMA) at West Point, he became the second highest cadet in his graduating class. As Brigade Executive Office, he marched in Ronald Reagan's inaugural parade and was at West Point shortly thereafter to greet the 52 hostages released from Iran. He served as an Army infantry officer for five years, becoming an Army Ranger, and commanding a 300-man company in Korea.

After leaving the Army, Ross began a long career in the software industry. At Management Science America (MSA) his interpersonal skills initiated a rewarding career as a recruiter. MSA provided more than a career for it was there that he met René, his wife of 34 years. He later worked as an account executive at Dun & Bradstreet Software, before joining Marketing Personnel Research. In 1995 he founded Selection Strategies, Inc. (SSI) and was serving as its Managing Principal at the time of his death. Over 28 years he placed more than 1200 candidates in the software industry.

Throughout his career, Ross remained dedicated to America and to the Army. He long served as the leader of Chicago's USMA alumni association. For many years Ross was also a key member - often the only Service Academy graduate - on the committee advising Illinois' 5th district Congressmen on nominations to the nation's five Service Academies.

Ross was many things over the course of his life. Depending on the years one knew him it was possible to miss the breadth of his interests and achievements: loving son & brother, loyal friend, Godfather, amateur actor and raconteur, student with intense focus (when a subject interested him), exceptional soldier, paratrooper, devoted husband, brilliant recruiter, successful entrepreneur, gourmet and wine connoisseur, amateur historian, Congressional advisor, and in the end organ donor.

Arrangements for a party in his honor will be forthcoming this spring.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to:

I had the good fortune to meet Ross while at MatrixOne/Dassault Systemes where Ross was instrumental in helping to bring on top talent into our sales organization.
Ross was the consummate professional, a class act, and a genuinely wonderful human being.
Ross's insights, common sense approach, and personable manner were always appreciated and impactful.
Ross was truly an exceptional individual who will be sorely missed.
RIP, Ross, and my deepest sympathy to Rene and to his sister Claire and to the many friends and extended family.

Over the years I've realized that Captain Ross Rich was the best leader I ever worked with, because he was authentic. As an Infantry Company Commander he didn't try to be something he was not and instead relied on what he was: well-informed, organized, extremely good at communication, personable, and respectful of others as well as himself. I was lucky I got to serve with him in the Second Infantry Division way over there in Korea!

I really really miss Ross. Truly my wingman in this software sales journey for 29 years. I can't even count the number of subjects where Ross served as my primary source of information and teacher. Many great meals and wine together with Ross and of course Rene (and the cats). Ross has left me with the precious gift of so many memories.

Wow, I´m really gonna miss Ross. A great friend, business confidant, and a hell of a lot of fun. The statistic that he placed over 1200 people in the software industry is amazing, but not surprising. He impacted that many plus more by helping them in their careers and in their lives. Ross, you will be missed.

I met Ross Rich in Kindergarten and attended elementary school with him at LaSalle School until 8th grade graduation. He was the first boy that I ever had a "crush" on. Those deep brown eyes and dimples were irresistible to a six year old first grader. He became very interested in the military after seeing the movie "Patton" with George C. Scott. I never saw Ross again after we graduated until our 51st grade school reunion in 2022 on Zoom. I am happy to know that he lead a rich and service-oriented life, as that was his dream. Mrs. Rich, I am so very sorry for the sudden loss of your beloved husband. I hope you are comforted to know that he lives on in your memories and in the memories of others.
With deepest sympathy,
Lillian Duty-Ludkowski

There are so many memories of good times spent with Ross and Rene. Many nights out on the town, visiting Napa Valley, and scores more.

But, my favorite times included being a guest at Ross and Rene's home. Always welcoming, plenty of wonderful food, great conversation, and an abundance of wine to share. Good times, good times.

Ross your persona lives on, in the hearts of your friends; with that twinkle in your eye, smile on your face and a glass of wine in your hand.

Cheers Ross.

Ross SO enjoyed a gathering of friends! He was quite the "foodie" and knew much about wines, among other things...very smart guy.

From the first time I saw Ross and René, it was easy to see their love would be until forever comes. Even though his being has left, he made an impression on everyone that he met and with that, forever goes on... we shall celebrate him for the rest of our days.

I met Ross wile working with René in the 90's. Ross was Passion, Integrity and a Friend for life. One these people that makes you feel at your place and helps you better understand what life is all about and where you belong. I never forgot this great dinner we had in Paris with some of the people that influence my professional and personal life for the past 30 years. Love to you René, you are strong and you are not alone. Our hearts are far away but our thoughts are with you.

Ross was a wonderful guy to know and he made René very happy. I'm sad to see such a multi-talented person taken away so early in his life.

Wonderful guy who understood the value of friendship. An epicurean with great taste and a curious mind. My lasting memory was sitting with Ross at a Steakhouse with a group of guys watch him twirl his Cabernet. Listening to his laugh. He will be missed by all who knew him.
