Charles SWANSON Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 2, 2003.
SWANSON _ Charles Andrew, aged 73, moved onwards suddenly and unexpectedly in the early morning of March 29, 2003. Born July 11, 1929 in Bellingham, Washington, Charles was raised in Vancouver by father Clarence Otto and mother Esther. Undergraduate degrees in physics and mathematics were obtained at UBC, after which Charles went to Pasadena, California, where he received his PhD in mathematics at Cal Tech. In 1957 Charles settled permanently in Vancouver with his new bride Carol Marie (nee Dennis), and began a long and distinguished professorship at the University of British Columbia. Outside the office, Charles had become a wicked hand at bridge as well as a fearsome opponent at countless golf tournaments. He was well known for his devotion to teaching, and greatly appreciated by his students. A trustworthy, conscientious and generous soul, Charles was unassuming and genuine in his dealings with people. Sorely missed by his loving family, Charles is survived by Carol, his wife of over 40 years; son Laird (Janice); daughter Denise; grandsons Galen and Andy; brother Max (Gudi); nephews Eric (Erin) and Norman (Chris); nieces Leila (Darren) and Tanya (Rob); ten great nephews and nieces; cousins Alan (Patti) and their son Mark and daughter Kirsten; Jack (Pat) and daughters Debbie, Barbara and Bev; Derek (Dorlice) and son Daryl; and all their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Prior to cremation, a Memorial Service will be held from the chapel of Ocean View Funeral Home, 4000 Imperial Street, Burnaby, at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 3rd. In lieu of flowers, donations to the charity of your choice would be appreciated. Tributes may be offered to the family through www.mem.com
