Clare Carolyn Apel Grossman

PORTSMOUTH: Clare Carolyn Apel Grossman, 96, of Portsmouth, passed away Monday, March 2, 2015 at the SOMC Hospice Center. She was born July 30, 1918 in Ironton, OH, a daughter of the late Otto Frederick Apel Sr., DDS and Claudia Bess McCurdy Apel.

Clare was a 1941 graduate of The Ohio State University. She worked as a registered nurse in Columbus and Zanesville and for Otto F. Apel Jr., MD in Portsmouth. She was a member of the Central Presbyterian Church, the Ladies Auxiliary to the American Veterinary Association and the Ladies Auxiliary to the Ohio Veterinary Association.

Her husband, Richard William Grossman Sr., DVM, whom she married June 13, 1942 in Portsmouth, preceded her in death March 16, 1974.

Surviving Clare are a son, Richard William Grossman Jr. of Zanesville; a daughter, Claudia Kay (Dr. Frank) Grossman Mohler of Boone, NC; a brother, William F.L. "Bill" Apel of Portsmouth; five grandchildren, Linsey Grossman, Clinton Hensley, Chase Hensley, Franklin Calvin Mohler III and Robin Hamlet; three great-grandchildren, Jonathan William Hamlet, Elliana Hamlet and Ryder Zitlaw; and six nieces and nephews, Barney Apel, Pat Apel, Lindsey Martin, Molly Glockner, Margaret Apel Miller and David Brant Apel.

Two brothers, David Apel and Otto F. Apel Jr., MD, also preceded her in death.

A Memorial Service will be held Wednesday at 10 A.M. in the Hill View Forest Room with Rev. Richard North officiating. Clare will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband in Memorial Park Cemetery in Zanesville Friday at 1:00 P.M.

Arrangements are under the direction of the RALPH F. SCOTT FUNERAL HOME in Portsmouth.

So very sad to say good-bye to a Grandmother and Great Grandmother... We will forever keep our memories of her close to our hearts and relish in the fact that she dances in HEAVEN!
