Clarence was an integral part of the Schuster Center for me. He was always friendly and spoke everytime I saw him, either back stage at chorus, or if I happened to meet him in the theater while I was ushering. Occasionally, he could be found moving the piano or some prop during a concert. I always teased him about his starring role. He also baked a delicious cake. You will be missed, Clarence.

As a chorus member for very many years, I have always enjoyed talking with Clarence on many occasions, I saw him and said hello Thursday night. Saturday night I was again looking for Clarence to talk with him before we rehearsed the Mahler 2nd, and sadly learned just before we went on stage, that he had passed that morning, I was shocked as I wasn't aware that he was ill!!
I really appreciated the cakes and cookies that he had his wife make for the chorus members, it was so very kind, thank you!!
I will miss seeing his smiling face and kindness around the Schuster when we rehearse and perform. I felt that the last performance on Saturday night of the "Resurection Symphony" was dedicated to Clarence.
God Bless you Clarence and your family!!

Mr. Rice was always the last person the Dayton Philharmonic Chorus members would see right as we walked onstage to the risers. He would always smile and nod his head. It was this little tradtion, and we always looked for him every performance night at the swing stage doors. He always had a smile and seemed to enjoy doing all the little extras he did for the DPO. I was so shocked and sad to hear of his sudden death. My sincere condolences. Taken too soon...

Saddened by the loss I am buoyed by the many memories of working with Clarence and being sustained by his wit, wisdom, and exceedingly dry sense of humor. It is time now to rest friend, you are sorely missed.
