WELLFLEET - Clarence Stanley Smith, 82, died on June 23, 2007, at Pleasant Bay Nursing Home in Brewster.

He was born and raised in Truro, was a graduate of Orleans High School and a longtime Wellfleet resident. A World War II veteran, he served on two ships as a torpedo man for the USS Fogg and USS Hill. He spent his military service in the North Atlantic and in Hawaii.

He was employed by Nickerson Lumber Company as manager of the Wellfleet and Orleans store, retiring after 25 years. After his career with Nickerson Lumber, he started his own real estate company, Clarence Smith Realty in Wellfleet.

Clarence was an associate and a member of various organizations including the American Legion Post 287, Wellfleet; the VFW in Provincetown; Adams Lodge AF&AM, Wellfleet; and the Destroyer Escort Sailors Association. For many years he was corporator for the Cape Cod Five Cents Savings Bank and also belonged to many town committees in Wellfleet.

He was the devoted husband to Phyllis (Rose); father of Dale C. Smith of Wellfleet; brother of Clyde Smith of Orlando, Fla., Dorothy Rose of Orleans and Ruth Jordan of Truro; and grandfather of Dale R. and April E., both of Wellfleet.

A graveside service will be held in Oakdale Cemetery, Wellfleet, on Tuesday, June 26, at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Wellfleet Police Association, 36 Gross Hill Rd., Wellfleet, MA 02667, or the Wellfleet Fire Association, P.O. Box 335, Wellfleet, MA 02667.

Brud, you have always been my hero, and will continue to be. I was glad to have gotten to see you in Hyannis, but so sorry I had to return home. Just know that I love you with all my heart, as only a brother can.
