Claudette Duhamel Mayes of San Jose, California, died June 12, 2018, after a long illness.
She was born on November 1, 1949, to Rita and Gerard Duhamel in W. Warwick, RI. She attended Christ the King School. She graduated from St. Xavier's Academy of Providence, RI, in 1967, and then attended Emmanuel College.
She was predeceased by her parents as well as her beloved husband, Warren Mayes, M.D., with whom she lived in Mountain View, CA, and with whom she is interred.
She is survived by her devoted brother Paul Duhamel of Harmony, RI; her first husband John Chalpin, DMD; Jessica Momenee -- who loved her so much -- and her family of North Berwick, ME; her son John-Paul Chalpin of Bel Air, MD; granddaughters Grace, Celia and Madison; a niece Nicole Lloyd and her family of Providence, RI; other relatives and dear friends on both coasts.
Claudette was a committed Christian in the Presbyterian Church and taught Old Testament studies. Intelligent and witty, her compassion for others was exemplified by her outspoken advocacy for nursing home patients.
She was an early coder for computers. Her skills as a seamstress were impressive. She was an outstanding quilter and also studied dress design, coming in sixth in a nationwide Vogue magazine contest. Sewing wedding gowns was her specialty.
A Memorial Service will be held on June 30 at 10 a.m. at Living Hope Christian Church, 730 South Country Trail, N. Kingstown, RI, with a reception to follow.
