Schubert, Clayton H., Jr. (62)
Co-founder and partner of Space Bank, Ltd., in Pasadena and a volunteer fund-raiser for Pomona College, died Friday. He was 62. Schubert, a long-time Arcadia resident, was active with youth organizations and St. Rita's Church in Sierra Madre. He died of complications from a heart ailment while hospitalized at Southern California Methodist Hospital in Arcadia. Schubert was born in Los Angeles, spent his early years in La Canada-Flintridge and resided in Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Palos Verdes Estates and Pasadena before moving to Arcadia in 1979. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Pomona College in 1962 and a Masters in Business Administration from Stanford University in 1964. He served as President of Pomona College Torchbearers, a group that contributes gifts to the college, and sponsored events and career development programs for Sigma Tau Fraternity at Pomona. Schubert began his career conducting feasibility studies across the nation for Economic Research Associates. In 1978 he purchased the abandoned U.S. Naval Undersea Center on Foothill Boulevard in east Pasadena to create Space Bank, a mini- and industrial-storage park company with facilities there, Los Angeles, and Kansas City, Mo. In the early 1990s, Schubert served as president of the St. Rita's Parish Council and Men's Club and was a frequent volunteer at soup kitchens at Union Station in Pasadena. He organized annual camping trips to Catalina Island for the YMCA Indian Princesses, Guides and Trailblazers. He also organized a junior ski team in Brianhead, Utah and enjoyed camping, skiing, fishing, traveling and reading. The Santa Anita Little League in Arcadia presented an award to Schubert and Space Bank last year for sponsoring a team for 16 years. Schubert leaves his wife, Margaret; mother, Estelle Schubert of Pasadena; two daughters, Catherine Schubert (Michael) Linenberg of Westfield, N.J. and Christina of South Pasadena; a son, Clayton "Randy" Schubert of Bozeman, Montana, and one grandchild, Spencer Clayton Linenberg. He is also preceded in death by his father Clayton H. Schubert. Visitation Friday, April 4, 5:00-8:00 P.M. with a Rosary beginning at 7:00 P.M. at Douglass & Zook Mortuary, Monrovia. Mass will be celebrated in his honor on Saturday, April 5 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Rita's Catholic Church, 318 N. Baldwin Ave., Sierra Madre, CA. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be made to St. Rita's Church or to Pomona College in care of the Stewardship and Memorial Funds Office, 550 N.
