I had the great pleasure of working with Cliff for many years. Without compare, he was an amazing surgeon he cared deeply and genuinely for all. But through all of the many great conversations Cliff and I had, one constant remained: Of all his outstanding accomplishments, his exuberant pride for Marianne and his children AWAYS was his favorite topic. He perpetually lauded each of his children and, of course, Marianne. He will forever be missed by countless lives he touched. I only want to restate the VERY obvious -- Of all the amazing things Cliff accomplished during his all-too-brief time with us, always, without fail, his children and his family were his absolute pride and joy. Never forget how deeply he loved each of you. My deepest sympathy for your unspeakable loss. My prayers are with each of you.

I was saddened to hear that Dr. Van Meter had passed away. I'm sure there are countless individuals such as myself, who were blessed by having him as their physician. He was kind and caring and my family will miss him. Although, we only knew him a short time we knew he was special by the way he treated us. Heaven is richer having him there and our prayers are with the Van Meter family.

Dear Family and Friends of Cliff,

I was very saddened to hear of Cliff's illness and now his death. I'm from Cliff's days at U. of Virginia. He was my senior and Chief Resident during my last 2 years of med school and during my first year of Surgical Residency. Somehow I ended up on the same service with Cliff for many months during that period. These were very formative years of my education that Cliff played a huge role in. I will always remember his humor, friendship, leadership, style and teaching. It is easy for me to see Cliff putting his hand on my shoulder, giving it a shaking squeeze, while smiling and saying: "hey Yahnno, let me tell you what I've done for you." Though he was certainly referring to some work related task, what he had actually done for me was his part in the instillation of a very special culture in surgical training that we had at Virginia.

Unfortunately, I had seen Cliff only a couple of times in the intervening 22 years, but had heard only good things about his journey. The notes in this guest book confirm the legacy he has created.

My heart goes out to all of you. I know how painful it is for those who have been close to Cliff. Know that he will also be missed by someone who has not seen him in a long time. I am grateful for having known him.

To the Van Meter Family - Our most heartfelt condolences on the lost of a wonderful, gifted, talented surgeon. My husband was one of the heart transplant recepitients that Dr. Van Meter gave a second chance for life. Reading his accomplishments and testimonies of the people he has touched in his short time on this earth shows what a caring, devoted person he was. He will be missed by all who knew him.

On behalf of my family and especially my kids who have come to know Cliff and his children, I wish to express our sympathies to the Van Meters.
When I learned of Cliff's passing, it brought absolute silence to my heart. We were all routing for him.
In the few talks that Cliff and I had at track and field events, I was always entertained by his sensitivity, insight and wisdom, and what I have read of his professional accomplishments in this aftermath has reaffirmed the magnitude of the man. What a guy! Yet, what was most obvious to me and echoed with me most as a father was just how loving he was. Love is the bond that keeps everything together. I guess that's why he was a doctor - he cared.
I know your pain and I grieve with you. Let prayer sooth your soul.
I hug you from afar in anticipation that your sorrow will one day become joy, because it does.
Let love bond you.

Although I am a native Louisianian, I didn't meet Dr. Van Meter until our paths crossed at MD Anderson Cancer Center where I am completing my fellowship training in oncology. From the first moment I met him, I knew I was among a truly exceptional human being. After each of my visits with Dr. Van Meter, I left with a greater sense of what my mission as a physician should be. Dr. Van Meter not only understood his role as a physician, but he truly honored the inherent privilege that accompanies the career. More importantly, his words and actions conveyed this message to an impressionable physician still in training.

Despite his struggles with his disease, Dr. Van Meter never assumed the role of patient. He remained the strong, stoic professor that everyone admired. He was a gentleman among gentlemen, a scholar among scholars, and a friend among friends.

As a gifted surgeon, Dr. Van Meter undoubtedly touched the lives of countless surgical residents and fellows. But, who could have known that one of his greatest contributions to medicine would be his influence on a young oncologist?

To the Van Meter family: I hope that you can find some comfort in the fact that Dr. Van Meter's influence lives on in the daily work of all of us that he trained. I am a better physician for having had the honor of knowing Dr. Van Meter.

Mrs. Van Meter and the entire Van Meter Family:

At this time there isn't much that anyone can do, but may you know that understanding thoughts are there with you. Dr. Van Meter performed triple by-pass surgery on my husband, Glenn, in February 2007. This surgery was sudden and I was scared. His kind words and explanation of the procedure made me feel at ease. He was an angel sent down from God. The surgery went well. I wanted the best for my husband and he certainly was the best. My husband is back to normal and Cliff saved his life. He was so professional and down to earth. I knew him back in college when he was at Tulane. I always remembered him excelling at everything he did especially in his studies and sports. What a great loss to the Medical Profession. May he rest in peace.

With Deepest Sympathy,

Dear Marianne, Logan, Chance, Merritt and Jade,
I worked with Cliff since the beginnings of the heart transplant program and the mechanical device program. As everyone has stated, he always beamed when he spoke of his family. Though you did not know us, we felt as if we knew you from the stories of your accomplishments. Even after he announced he was sick, he would relay tales about football and track. He had an aura surrounding him which one felt whenever he entered a room. He also was proud of his Indian heritage and the times he spent in Oklahoma. The ceremony you created for his funeral was very moving as it included the simple things that he loved...his friends, his children, his heritage. Thank you for sharing that with us. He will continue to remain a presence as an eternal part of this heart transplant team and serve to remind us to carry on with grace and compassion in the act of healing and offerings of the gift of life. I know he has already made his presence known in heaven. Godspeed!

Cliff was an all-star in the cardiac surgery world and a friend to many, like myself, in industry. We met during development and then deployment of artificial heart therapies, together talked of saving lives with devices as such. I always looked forward to visiting when in New Orleans or at meetings around the Country. My deepest condolences.

I was 76 years old and dreaded the needed heart surgery. Then I met Dr. Cliff and in talking with him for only five minutes, I agreed to the surgery. When I woke up in ICU I became aware of a tall figure in a white coat standing behind the glass partition in the nurse's station. I recognized him and gave him a slow left-handed salute. He stood there for a second, then he gave me a salute back and then he smiled broadly. I slipped back into sleep, happy with the knowledge that God had indeed smiled upon me that day. I look forward to the day soon when I can once again offer a salute to the man who gave me additional time. God is very fortunate to have Dr. Cliff by his side.

Melissa and I were friends and co-workers. I now work at Ochsner. One day I asked Dr. Van Meter if Melissa was available for work because I had an opening at my accounting office at Brent House. That is when I found out that she had passed. Now they are together. Each of them were extraordinary people taken before their time and loved by so many. My prayers are with your family. Thank you for giving us two people whom made such a great impact in so many lives. With my deepest sympathy and love.

Dearest Marianne, Logan, Cliff, Merritt and Ms. Patty, It was my pleasure to serve Dr. Van Meter as his Administrative Assistant for more than 8 years. It was his kindness and caring that made me proud to be one of his team. You all made me feel, as if I were a part of your wonderful family. Dr. Van Meter would sometimes bring Logan and Cliff to my office and asked me to watch over them while he ran errands, and it was a pleasure to be with both of you. When Merritt was born, he was so very excited and proud, just as he was with all of you! You could always see the love in his face whenever he spoke of you. It was not only my pleasure, but my honor to be a part of this great man's life and it was with his kindness and concern that I was able to see people in a very different light. He loved his job and his patients, but most of all he loved each of you. Mariane and Ms. Patti, I thank you for allowing me to be a part of your family's life, and I know God is looking out for you because Dr. Van Meter has instructed him to do so! If you are ever in need of anything, or if I can be of service in any way, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Dear Mrs. Van Meter and Family: You have my deepest sympathy in the loss of Dr. Clifford Van Meter, Jr. I met Dr. Van Meter 2 years ago when he performed a Thymectomy on me. I met Cliff July 1979. He and Larry Brewer were room mates while he was attending Tulane med school. We all became very close friends. Cliffs last six months in med school he need a place to live other than at homw with his parents. I offered my condo so that he had a place to live for these few months. We became life long friends during these few months. I was part of his wedding in 1986. The think I most loved about Cliff was his story telling. He could make up the damns things from what had happened at a party or something we had done that was fun. I will miss him.
