Clotilde Costa
Feb 5, 1920 - Nov 7, 2012
Resident of Richmond
Clotilde Costa passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday with family by her side at the age of 92.
Born in S#227;o Braz de Alportel, Algarve, Portugal in 1920, Clotilde immigrated to the United States with her mother Catarina Pereira in 1927 at age 7, passing through Ellis Island and finally settling in Antioch with her father Francisco where she eventually graduated from Antioch High School.
She married her sweetheart Manuel Costa in 1939 and eventually moved to Richmond where she was a resident for over 60 years. After building their businesses Save More Market in Richmond and MC Liquors in Alamo, they retired in 1974. Her husband of 37 years Manuel died unexpectedly in 1976.
Clotilde was preceded in death by her parents Francisco and Catarina, brother Manuel Pereira and sister Thelma Simarro.
She is survived by her two loving daughters, Lydia Costa and Madeline Amaral and son-in-law Lino S. Amaral of Rodeo, grandson Lino M. Amaral and wife Linda of Concord and granddaughter Lisa M. Mendes and husband Paul of Newark. The greatest joys of her later life were her great-grandchildren, Matthew, Monica, Gabriela, Daniela and Lindsey who will never forget their "Vozinha". In addition there are several loving nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family from all over the world knew her as "VoVo". Clotilde had a passion for dancing, playing cards, playing the slots and the lottery - we certainly felt we won the lottery by having her in our lives for as long as we did.
Extremely proud of her Portuguese heritage and her long-time friendships, she was a member of several organizations including the Luso-American Fraternal Federation, San Pablo Holy Ghost Assoc, SDES Alvarado, SPRSI and others.
Friends and family are invited to attend a Visitation beginning at 6:00 pm followed by Rosary on Tuesday, Nov. 13th at St. David's Church, 5641 Esmond Ave., Richmond. Funeral Mass will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 14th at 11:00 am at St. David's Church followed by Internment at St. Joseph's Cemetery, 2540 Church Lane in San Pablo.
Donations may be made to the Luso-American Education Foundation in the name of Clotilde Costa, 7080 Donlon Way, Suite 200 Dublin, CA 94568 or any charity of your choice.

John, Johnny and I were saddened to hear of your grandmother's passing, and know she will be terribly missed by your family. But we know she was loved and lived a very full and beautiful life surrounded by family. Our prayers are with you, and hope your happy memories of her guide you through your sorrow today.

Mrs. Costa was everyone's Avo and an important part of our family celebrations. She was an inspiration to me as I admired all those wonderful qualities that made her the special person that she was. Her words of wisdom and caring heart made her a great friend and honorary Avo to my chilrem. She always spoke in the most glowing terms of how much the love of family and friends meant to her. I will always be grateful that my children and I had the opportunity to know her. We will cherish her memory for years to come. As Mrs. Costa would always say "be kind to each other". With our deepest sympathy..

I used to call her Senhora and she told me she didn't like being called that so I told her I didn't want to call her by her first name cause it didn't feel right so she said I could call her Vovo since I was family with Carla then that meant I was part of her family...so I can't tell you how many years she was known to me as Vovo. She was a beautiful lady on the outside but even more beautiful on the inside..her heart was bigger than life and I will never forget her. I will miss my "partner" at John and Carla's house..Vovo you may be gone but never forgotten. To the family my deepest and heartfelt sympathy and may the Lord be with all of you at this difficult time!!

Titia will always be a fixture in the memory of my childhood. Thanksgiving is always a time that I think of her and it will continue to be. So many holidays celebrated together and her smile was a part of that. I wish that I could be there to celebrate her life, but I will be there in spirit. Love to all!
