Colleen Hagen Obituary

Published by Duluth News Tribune on Jul. 29, 2008.
Colleen Phair Hagen, 73, of Lester Park, passed away Sunday, July 27, 2008 in the Solvay Hospice House from Pancreatic cancer. She was born on March 1, 1935 in Oakland, Maine to Kenneth B and Evelyn Ham Phair and moved to Brunswick, Maine at the age of six. After graduating from Brunswick High School in 1953, she attended the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Mass., where she studied two years with Hungarian concert pianist, Miklos Schwalb. While there, she was soloist with the Portland (Maine) Junior Symphony Orchestra. She later transferred to the Yale University School of Music in New Haven, Conn., where she received her BMUS degree in applied piano performance and was a member of the professional fraternity Sigma Alpha Iota. While at Yale, she became interested in choral conducting and for the next several years dedicated herself to directing choirs and teaching piano from her home. Colleen married LTJG John C. Hagen in Brunswick, Maine on Aug. 1, 1959. They lived in Spain for five months before moving to Minneapolis and Duluth. She sang 33 years with the Duluth Superior Symphony Chorus and 11 years with the Duluth Opera Chorus. She also served three years as Membership Chairman for Matinee Musicale. She always enjoyed learning and later earned a secretarial certificate from the Duluth Area Vocational Technical Institute before becoming employed for several years by ISD 709 and Minnesota Power. While in her 50s, she completed the undergraduate courses in Choral Conducting at UMD and resumed her voice lessons. Next to her family, her greatest joy in life was communicating her love for the Lord through music. She was a member of Lincoln Park Community Church and the Auxiliary of the Gideon's International. She was preceded in death by her father, Kenneth and her aunt, Doris George. Besides her loving husband, John, she is survived by her mother, Evelyn Ham Phair of Brunswick, Maine; her children, Ellen (Dennis) Gunter of Crestview, Fla.; sons, David C. (Linda) Hagen of Duluth and Philip Hagen of Superior, Wis.; grandchildren, Shaun and Bonnie Gunter of Crestview, Fla., Samuel, Allison and Stephanie Hagen and Jacob Lockwood all of Duluth; three cousins, Marlene (Richard) Harris and Wayne (Peggy) Ham of Winslow, Maine and Selma Pulcifur of Oakland, Maine. VISITATION:5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday in Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home and will continue from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral service on Thursday, July 31, 2008 in the Lincoln Park Community Church, 2202 West 3rd St. Rev Paul VanCamp officiating. Burial at Forest Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Lincoln Park Community Church or the Gideon's International would be appreciated. Arrangements by Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home.

Our deepest sympathy goes out to you all! Though we did not know Colleen very well, over the years (as teenagers) hanging out with Phil we definitely knew how much she meant to him,and that they appeared very close. She sounded like such an amazing woman. We are so sorry for your loss. Words can not describe our empathy for you and our hope that you will all be alright. My mother passed away in 1989 (from multiple myeloma), and there is no greater loss than a mother (or spouse). You are all are in our thoughts and prayers. And Phil feel free to contact us if you need to talk. We will be coming up north 8-22-08. Take care. Sincerely, Teresa (nee-Atkinson) & Family, and Debbie (nee-Kurrle) & Family.

Colleen was truly blessed with a loving and devoted family and friends, and she will be dearly missed. I have so many wonderful memories of her when we were young, telling each other marvelous stories in Grammie's featherbed at the "farm" and also roller-skating and bike-riding at camp, horseback riding and later double-dating. She was a very special cousin, and Dick joins me in sending our love and condolences to you all.

To the Family of Colleen Hagen,

As a Monday night volunteer at the Solvay Hospice House, I would like to express my sympathy to you for the loss of your beloved Colleen. While I had little opportunity to do much more than go in and offer assistance to you a few times (nothing memorable on your part), I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Colleen this morning and "getting to know her". I was amazed at how much we had in common and see what a legacy she leaves you. I was blessed to learn of her passion to communicate her love for the Lord through music as I have an active music ministry in the area due to the same love....and am often singing at Solvay. Colleen was able to know how God placed something so special in music that it opens up the heart and soul to His presence in a way that words alone don't seem to do. And now she is singing and praising the Lord, finally at peace with the Prince of Peace. She can now "see clearly, face to face" what we still only see dimly. How amazing! I grew up a few blocks from the Lincoln Park Community Church, then Temple Baptist, occasionally attending activities there, and have also done occasional singing for Williams Lobermeier - other connections I just learned of. May Colleen reside deep in your hearts through the memories she leaves with you, knowing her legacy has been fulfilled in her life on earth, but now carries on through each of you.

May God richly bless you,

Wayne and Peggy Ham
