On Wednesday, October 28, 2015, in Los Angeles, California, God summoned home Cynthia Marcella Martino, affectionately known as “Cindy.”

Cindy was born on May 1, 1963, in Montgomery, Alabama. She was the fifth child and youngest daughter of the late Curtis Jr. and Jannie Martino. Known as “da momma” to her siblings, even though she was younger, Cindy was a loving and take charge sister and aunt. When she talked, we listened. She loved her nieces and nephews as her own children. Cindy was very vivacious and lived life to the fullest and made herself known wherever she went. She had an infectious smile and personality and even though she lived with the sickle cell disease, she didn’t let it define her. Cindy was an Actor, Writer, Teacher, Visionary, Dreamer, Prophetess, Encourager, and Beautiful Soul.

Cindy was educated in the public schools of Rantoul, Illinois and South Carolina. She graduated from Holly Hill High School in 1981 with honors. From there she went to Winthrop College, Rock Hill, South Carolina where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in TV Broadcasting and Children’s Theatre Specialty. From there, she went to the University of South Carolina and received her Master’s Degree in Theatre and the Arts. Cindy also taught at the University of South Carolina-Spartanburg for a couple of years. Because of her love for the theatre and acting, and after traveling back and forth to New York City, she decided to move to Los Angeles, California.

Cindy’s career had afforded her the opportunity to perform and appear on television and stage. Her television appearances include the Fox Kids Special on Fox TV. She has appeared in Regional Theatre and has performed in “The Colored Museum,” and played the role of Beneatha in “Raisin in the Sun” with the Winthrop Players. She also trained in gymnastics and modern dance. She knew sports such as volleyball, skating, and horseback riding. In addition, she sang well and was adept at bartending and motorcycling, so she could adapt in many different roles.

Cyndi was a beautiful person inside and out. It was wonderful to hear of the power of her conviction that those of us in the arts and entertainment field should look to serve the Lord with gladness in all that we do.

Though it has been about a decade since her passing and me just running across this, it was a pleasure to know her for the time that I did wonderful to here about the impact that she had on the people around her, even in her work place.

My dear Cindy, You were a phenomenal Beneatha in 'A Raisin In The Sun' at Winthrop in '82. You portrayed my younger sister, ( I was Walter Lee) in a groundbreaking production that featured the 1st predominantly African American cast at Winthrop. You were born on the same day as my younger sister and you've always been a great sister to me.I'm glad you never let that insidious disease stop you from achieving your vision. It has been my honor to have been your friend. No more pain. Sleep in peace Martino. Prayers to the family. All Bblessed

I am so very sorry to learn of the loss of Cyndy Martino. I met Cyndy my freshman year at Winthrop University and we became instant best friends. After graduation we both moved to Columbia to get our Master's in Theater. We were in many performances together and were always in the audience for each other cheering and applauding. When she walked into a room you were instantly drawn to her positive energy and dazzling smile. She was truly a positive life force and heaven is a better place now because I know she is there. Although I have not seen her in many years I know that she was living the dream in Los Angeles acting and being what she always wanted to be " A Star". And she was! I am forever blessed to have known such an incredible and gifted human being. Cyndy and the Martino family will forever be in my thoughts and prayers.
