DeWitt, MI
Dale Curtis Haviland, beloved husband, devoted father, "Papa", and Great-Papa, 81, walked into the arms of Jesus Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at his home. He was born April 26, 1929 to Morris and Helen (Phelps) Haviland.
Dale was a retired farmer and tinsmith for GM. He very proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1948 to 1952 during the Korean war. He was an active charter member of First Baptist Church of DeWitt. Dale married the love of his life Yvonne L. Hickerson on July 29, 1950 and she survives him. He was a proud father of six children, three sons; Danny (Debbie) Haviland, David (Peggy) Haviland, Duane (Cheryl) Haviland; three daughters Kathi (Clair) Overley, Christina (Scott) Salters, and Sarah (Jim) Strader. Dale was also a very proud Papa to 22 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren. He has one surviving sister, Lucele Stone; a sister-in-law, Waneta Haviland; and one brother-in-law, Dan Holdridge. He was known to many nieces and nephews as loving "uncle Dale". Preceding Dale in death were his parents, Morris and Helen Haviland; one brother, Billy; four sisters, Francis, Leona, Dorotha, Carol Jean; one son-in-law, Roger Hicks; and one grandson, Jonathan Hicks.
Dale particularly enjoyed playing cards (winning) and fishing. He loved reading his "Mule Magazine" as it arrived each month from cover to cover, picking out his favorite mule of the month. He was a past 4-H Leader in dairy and tractor safety, and a girl's softball coach for Olive 4-H club. Dale loved his family and farm, and he will be greatly missed by all.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 26, 2011, at 3:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of DeWitt, 11068 S. DeWitt Road, DeWitt, MI with Rev. Dan Wilkinson officiating. The family will receive friends on Friday, March 25, 2011 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Church. Those desiring may make contributions to the First Baptist Church of DeWitt, in memory of Dale.
