Dale Cooper McCarthey

Dale Cooper McCartney passed away October 11 at her home in Rome, GA. She is the wife of Herbert R. McCartney.

After their marriage in 1963, the McCartneys lived in Chattanooga, TN, then moved to Atlanta, where they lived until coming to Rome in 1972.

Mrs. McCartney is the daughter of John Ralph Cooper and Dorothy Engers Cooper, both of Chattanooga. She received a B.A. in English from the University of Chattanooga in 1962 and was a member of Chi Omega Fraternity. She taught English at East Ridge High School for a year before she and her husband moved to Atlanta. While in Atlanta she worked for Georgia Power Company at their headquarters building.

The McCartneys have one daughter, Enger McCartney-Smith of Mount Holly, N.C. She is also survived by her son-in-law, David Smith; three grandchildren, Aliya Smith, Atlanta; Iain Smith, North Hollywood, CA; and Jacob Smith, Charlotte, N.C.; and a sister, Jenny Cooper Smith, North Port, FL; and several nieces and cousins.

After moving to Rome in 1972, Mrs. McCartney joined the Rome News-Tribune in 1976 as a staff writer and, later, as Lifestyle editor. She continued in that job until 1984, when she became a consultant to the News-Tribune, remaining in that job until 1990. She was employed part-time by the newspaper as a copy editor from 1990 to 1992.

Mrs. McCartney was a board member of several civic organizations, including Open Door Home, Rome Symphony Guild, and Chiaha Guild of Arts and Crafts. She also worked with the Rome Area Chamber of Commerce on its Fine Arts committee, which she served as co-chairman.

Since 1972, Mrs. McCartney was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Rome. She was a former member of King Memorial Methodist Church in Chattanooga.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. at Forest Hills Cemetery in Chattanooga on Wednesday, October 18.
