Dale E. Peterson was born on the farm south of Colome on August 4, 1934 to Ralph and Barbara (Mackrall) Peterson. Dale attended country schools and graduated from Colome High School in 1952, and farmed with his uncle Bud Mackrall south of Colome. Dale and his uncle Bud moved to town in 1959 and operated the Corner Bar. He joined the National Guard in 1953 and served on active duty at Ft. Riley, KS from October 1961 to August 1962 during the Berlin Crisis. Upon his discharge from active duty, Dale began working at Colome Producewhich later became Bee Seeds. He worked there for 39 ½ years until his retirement. Dale was active in the community. He served with the Colome Volunteer Fire Department for 35 years; eleven of those years he was the Chief. He was also an active member of the Colome American Legion and participated in the color guard. On December 19, 1964 Dale married Caroline Fetzer and they made their home in Colome. Dale was confirmed in the Zion Lutheran Church in 1967. Dale and Caroline were blessed with two children Tom and Roxi. As a child Dale enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing baseball. He kept the love of these activities all his life. He played when he was a boy and also on the Colome, McNeely and Clearfield amateur teams. He coached Colome Teener baseball for many years. Dale was an avid Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears fan. In his retirement he enjoyed fishing, mowing at the Colome athletic fields and spending time at the Legion where he tended bar. Dale especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Dale passed away at the Avera Gregory Health Care Center surrounded by his wife and children on March 13, 2013. Dale was preceded in death by his parents, his step father Joe Lunne, one brother Ralph D. Peterson Jr., two sisters Barbara Grenoble and Loretta Wiedman, one brother-in-law Bob Slade, and a nephew Brad Peterson. Dale is survived by his wife Caroline, his son Thomas (Lisa) Peterson and their children Thomas Jr. and Adriana all of Houston TX, his daughter Roxanne (Leon) Summerville and their children Ashton and Kalli all of Platte, SD, his brothers Jack (Pat) Lunne of Gilbert, AZ and Blaine Lunne of Pine Haven, WY, his sisters Alice Slade of Gregory, SD and Ruth (Doug) Jones of Pierre, SD, other survivors include his in-laws Dennis (Janice) Grenoble of Gregory, Curt Wiedman of Mission, SD, Connie Peterson of Pierre, SD, Myrna (Larry) Pechota, Jerald (Bonnie) Fetzer, and Jeannette(Roger) Miller all of Colome, SD, and by many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. * * * * * * * * * * * * * Funeral services for Dale Peterson were held on Monday, March 18, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Colome, SD with Pastor Don Windsperger officiating. A prayer service was held Sunday evening at the church. Music was provided by Janet Cerv, organist. Congregational songs were "Amazing Grace," "The Old Rugged Cross," and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus." Faye Bertram was in charge of registration. Flower attendants were Teresa Lincoln, Tammy Richey, and Nancy Miller. Ushers were Dan Musilek and Ray Worden. Casket Bearers were Eric Grenoble, Curt Wiedman, Rocky Wiedman, Joe Lunne, Jeff Slade, Todd Talcott, Chad Talcott, Duane Lunne, Ron Miller, and Randy Pechota. Honorary Casket Bearers were the Colome Volunteer Fire Department. Interment was in the Colome City Cemetery, Colome, SD. Military honors were given by the Colome American Legion. * * * * * * * * * * * * * Letting Go "The angels gathered near your bed so very close to you For they knew the pain and suffering that you were going through I thought about so many things as I held tightly to your hand Oh, how I wished that you were strong and happy once again But your eyes wer looking homeward to that place beyond the sky Where Jesus held His outstretched arms, it was time to say good-bye I struggled with my selfish thoughts for I wanted you to stay So we could walk and talk again like we did - just yesterday But Jesus knew the answer and I knew he loved you so So I gave to you life's greatest gift, the gift of letting go Now my heart will carry memories of the love you gave to me Until we meet again in Heaven where the best is yet to be." ---J.
