Dan Douglas-Crampton

DOUGLAS-CRAMPTON , Dan March 20, 1924 - March 3, 2010 Dan passed away peacefully in Cranbrook on March 3rd. He was born in Warren, Ontario in 1924; a town named after his grandfather, George Warren. He was the youngest of four children and spent the first few years of his childhood hunting, canoeing and riding horses. As soon as he turned eighteen, Dan joined the Royal Canadian Navy during WWII and served aboard the HMCS Dunver until the end of the war. He met and married Bridget Myfanwy Jane Appleton in England in 1947 and brought her back to Canada as his bride. They had six children, David, Nicki, Karen, Stephanie, Fiona and Katrina. Dan was a bush pilot for several years in Northern Ontario and became an accomplished horseman and trainer whose horses competed in the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico. His prize stallion Himeryk sired several horses whose progeny are still in the RCMP Musical Ride today. He had a great love of animals and the family home, Tarmoncarra, was always bustling with the activity that only six children and countless pets and farm animals could produce. Dan was widowed in 1991, and a few years later moved to a beautiful ranch outside Kimberley where he lived for the rest of his life. He made frequent visits to see family in Ontario, Calgary and Vancouver. Dan lived a very full life, and will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by his children and their families, as well as his seventeen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. There will be a Celebration of Life held at Elk Ridge Ranch, 8740 Findlay Road, Cranbrook, BC, on Saturday, March 6 - 2:00 p.m. onwards. A second Celebration of Life will be held in Ontario at a later date. Announcement to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either the MS Society or the SPCA.
