Dan Flanagan Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 14, 2018.
Dan Flanagan

Dan passed away peacefully on January 6, 2018 at the age of 90. He grew up in Salt Lake City. During WWII he served in the navy. After moving to Seattle, Dan opened Flanagan's Automotive on Capital Hill where he operated for many years. Active with the Automotive Service Association, Dan was highly involved to help upgrade the industry. Dan was a private pilot; he loved the time he spent flying his Beechcraft Debonair. Proud of his Irish heritage, Dan and Joan were honored to have been grand marshals for the St. Patrick's parade in 2013. Dan and Joan are charter members of St. Matthew Catholic Church. Preceded in death by his parents Bernard and Lila, and brother Bernard, Dan is survived by Joan, his wife of 65 years, and his sister Lila Carusillo. Dan loved his family more than anything else: his children Therese (Dan) Evans, Eileen (John) Gray, Brian (Imelda), Julie (Matt) McElroy, Kevin (Hollind), 10 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

Services will be on Saturday, January 20 at 11:00 am at St. Matthew, 1240 NE 127th, Seattle.

It doesn´t seem like six years since my dear friend Dan passed from this earth to his heavenly home. Few days go by when I don´t think of an experience we had over the 35+ years we worked and played together. Just days ago Walt Commans, who succeeded Dan at ASE in the West, retired, as did his longtime boss and friend Trish Serratore, senior vice-president of ASE. Trish flew out from the east coast for Dan´s memorial service because she so admired his devotion and dedication to improving the automotive industry. She and I reminisced about Dan´s efforts on many occasions prior to and after his death.

It was just two days ago an automotive industry friend and I were reminiscing about Dan and his devotion to ASE and the industry. He is still missed by many.

Still have so many fond memories of my longtime friend. We had so many great trips together and worked tirelessly to improve the automotive industry, but mostly had fun doing it.

Dan was a inspiration and a quiet mentor to all of us in the promotion of automotive excellence through training and education. Dan and I had paths that crossed many times over the past 40 years that I have known him and he always had a positive comment or a word or two of encouragement to help me to help others in the automotive profession in the Seattle area and beyond. Because of Dan, automotive technicians are better educated and repair cars more effectively and accurately. Thanks Dan you will be missed. Ed Schaplow, Brier Washington

Joan, Brian, Kevin, Therese, Julie, Eileen, grandchildren and great grandchildren...my sincere sympathy to you all at the loss of your husband, father and grandfather.

As you know, Dan and I shared a great deal of time together over the past 35-plus years working in the automotive industry, but we also shared time experiencing life - visiting friends in the hospital, attending family and friend's special events, and enjoying lunches and dinners together.

Few in our industry had such devotion to promoting excellence as did Dan. He was a dedicated force in his promotion of education and training and the overall uplifting of the service and repair industry in the Northwest and well beyond. He worked tirelessly with trade associations, industry leaders, and ASE to make the automotive aftermarket and industry in general a better place for those of us who worked within the field, but also for consumers who used the services of repair and service facilities.

Dan was awarded many of the automotive industry's most prestigious awards for his dedication and efforts to promote excellence in education, training, and a high level of industry performance. All well deserved!

An Irishman tried and true, he was immensely proud of his heritage and I always enjoyed flying with him in the Bonanza plane with the green and white shamrock on the tail.

And to Joan, all of Dan's accomplishments would never have happened without your support and allowance of his time and energy. As I have said many times, Joan (Fogerty) Flanagan is a Saint.

God Bless the entire family!

To Dan's family, sorry for your loss. Jeremiah 29:11 assures us that God is thinking thoughts of peace towards us, to give us a future and a hope, may that bring you comfort at this difficult time.
