Dan Fogelberg passed away on Sunday after a three-year battle with prostate cancer. He was 56, and like many people, I felt shocked and saddened to hear news of someone who has died too young. Fogelberg waged a valiant fight, by all accounts, and died peacefully at home in Maine with his wife, Jean, by his side.
Obituaries appeared the following day in newspapers and on websites, noting Fogelberg's string of hit albums in the 1970s and early '80s. He scored several platinum and multi-platinum albums fueled by hit singles, among them "Leader of the Band," a poignant tribute to his father, and "Same Old Lang Syne," a bittersweet Christmas Eve narrative.
But odds are slim that appreciations will start pouring in like they did for Ike Turner, who died last week. Fogelberg was neither pioneer nor virtuoso. He won no Grammys and left a modest musical legacy. Moreover, his genre was soft-rock, a sound much maligned for its lack of edge and much loved by romantic young females.
Surprise at word of Fogelberg's untimely death was shortly followed by something like a recovered memory: I was one of those girls. The year the Sex Pistols started a revolution, I was in my room listening to "Nether Lands." It's an unabashedly lush album - a suite-like set of songs drenched in classical arrangements and country-rock guitars, emotional fireworks and verses in French. The cream of the Southern California crop played on the record: Don Henley, Joe Walsh, Russ Kunkel, J. D. Souther. Some of it sounds exquisite to this day: the simple, elegant melody to "Dancing Shoes," for example, and the Baroque wistfulness of "Scarecrow's Dream." "Sketches" is a fever dream in waltz time, a pop song as sad and weighty as a teenager's heart.
Later in his career, Fogelberg would go on to pen more topical tunes, mainly concerned with the environment. But it was the heavily arranged ballads and exuberant folk-rockers like "Part of the Plan" that touched his fans most deeply. Fogelberg sang high and hard, with his whole voice. He infused his music with a tenderness and eagerness that's often frowned upon by the cognoscenti and embraced by a different slice of the population - people eager for tenderness. His was flagrant, bordering on shameless. If you were a pop fan with a soft spot for pretty melodies and vulnerable guys, Fogelberg was your man.
Fogelberg was a brief fixture on my oddball music trajectory, an arc that's turned out to be the opposite of most people's. The cultivated, innocuous stuff - Dan Fogelberg's beautiful songs - came first. Years later I became a rock fan. Fogelberg certainly didn't fit the myth or make the sound of rebellious youth, but I'm here to say he provided the soundtrack to some seriously fringe behavior.
Maybe his dulcet tunes were a sort of safety net, a way back to home base. They were definitely the sweet, sweet sound of sanity during the craziest times.

His music engulfed me in the 70´s in So Cal, and still does. Never missed a concert. A true poet - and talented musician. Every year on Dec 16 , I spend at least half the day playing all his albums and I always celebrate him with a spot in my house on this day.

After listening to Netherlands I bought several other albums and then guitar songbooks to learn how to play his songs. I would sit in my bedroom as a teenager and teach myself The Raven and Part of the Plan and feel connected to him and the lyrics. Here I am 40+ years later and still listening to his music. It's timeless. Thank you Dan! To The Morning is still one of my favorites.

Saw DF at Waterloo Village 31 July 1988 w/family members who have passed on. 1981 at Brendan Byrne Arena E.Rutherford, NJ.........rock show. It's OK if you feel DF didn't get the attention you feel he was worthy of. He left a great legacy for the rest of us. Dan's music is in me head daily. I've lost count on how many times I graced his venues solo and with his band including performances with Tim Weisburg. Even though all were top notch performances, my favorites was Dan solo. I miss him deeply and know his voice is being heard in the heavens. Dan has always been my favorite musician since the young age of 13 and now at 63, he is still my favorite. My heart goes out to his wife, the love of his life, Jean Fogelberg. Dan, your legacy will live on forever...

His voice was one of a kind... Soothing, relaxing, and comfortable. And by all accounts, he was a legitimately good man, friend, and human being. I almost had a chance to interview him one late night in Bangor when he was due to fly into the airport, but sadly my editors told me not to bother to go out and try to interview him. It's one of my biggest regrets that I didn't go anyway. God bless Dan Fogelberg.

Thank you Dan for the enjoyment and beauty your music has added to my life. One of the best weeks ever was being at the beach with my family and capping it off with your 25th anniversary concert- it was truly my favorite concert. I´m so glad Jean shared the man behind the music first in her caregiver´s blog, and then during the pandemic. It´s crazy how talented you were in so many aspects of your life. You spread so much joy through your voice, your instruments, your quirky humor, your art and photography, seemingly the person you were. We were so lucky and grateful to be on the receiving end. And still are.

Dan Fogelberg´s songs are the one, still, that when they come on my satellite radio station, I stop what I´m doing and just take the time. The time to really listen; to think, feel, appreciate, remember and recall the loves in my life.

Dan´s music could blast me up into another time zone where our young family was just finding it´s footings. His rich voice soothed my soul. My husband playfully named his new Palm Tree "Rosie" as a tribute to one of Dan´s songs about a jilted band member. Our earthly home lost out on his future masterpieces. Perhaps Dan will introduce us to new hits in our Heavenly Home.

Every time I hear one of your tunes , I recall a lady i was with, ie a soundtrack of my life and my Julie has bee the one for over 3 decades. your songs have shouted in my ear during major life events, way back to my time in the service during the waning years of Nam, the marriage, the birth of my 2 adult children, the depression leading to divorce, and the joys of rediscovery and remarriage...your melodies accompanied the singular events of my life like a tag along balladeer, and a virtuoso one to boot. Rest easy, old friend and someday we'll meet so I can hug and thank you for all the classy and poignant accompaniments youve blessed us with. There will never be another Dan Fogelberg in my lifetime. I just learned from other posts that Dan's birthday was August 13. Dan Fogelberg was the one artist my husband and I both shared as a favorite, discovering him at different times in our lives, but enjoying him together throughout our own marriage. My husband passed away on December 31, 2020, and his birthday on August 6 was extremely difficult. Knowing now that both Dan and my husband were of the Leo astrological sign seems fitting, as my husband shared a deep awareness and understanding of personal emotions and the need for environmental stability. RIP Dan, and RIP my beautiful husband -- until we meet again.

I miss Dan so very much. I had always hoped to see him in concert and never got the chance. To this day I regret that. I loved all of his music and his beautiful voice. My favorite songs: "Song From Half Mountain", "The Netherlands" and "Dancing Shoes". The latter had incredibly sad memories for me at the time it came out (sad break-up) but years later I became friends with that person again. Ironically it was that same person who turned me on to Dan Fogelberg in the first place.
Rest In Peace oh gentle soul.

I stumbled upon Jean's memoirs "All The Time In The World" ... one afternoon - and read the ENTIRE manuscript in one night. I couldn't stop at one chapter - without going on to the next ... and the next one after that; until I had read every word. Poignant. Beautiful words - for a man who many of us loved through his music. Her words revealing the humble side, the person he was out of the spotlight. I believe they truly were "soul mates". Jean ... although it's been 13 1/2 years - I am certain your heart still carries that love & devotion, forevermore. This many years later - my condolences to you. I cried when I read HIS story as only you could tell it; and in reading the hardships you'd endured afterwards - my heart broke for you. The beautiful ranch he'd built that you two had made so many wonderful memories - to the house by the sea in Maine.

Dear Dan, writing this additional tribute to you,and your family, (as I had written to you 13 years ago tomorrow), with remembrance of your peaceful passing, to again say that we are so very thankful and appreciative of the musical legacy you have left behind for your family, friends, and fans. Have all your albums - (and saw you in several wonderful concerts in the 1980’s), so many of your songs evoke special memories for us both, ( music that “got us through” our high school, and college years), but songs that still reasonate with sweet sensitivity for us! You were a sublime musician and storyteller combined! Right now, have been enjoying your Christmas album , “the first Christmas morning”, which is our favorite Christmas album which we enjoy listening to every year!
May your spirit always live on through your music for generations to come!
Always enjoyed your visual artwork as well, especially on the inside covers of “Souvenirs”.

I was 10 years old when i first heard of Dan Folger ..My older brother loved music . He bought this album The innocent age and I played this album non stop for months. Years later in a club in Salthill. Galway. Ireland (where i am from) I hear "same old lang syne" And it brought me back to my very happy youth.. And now every time i hear songs from that album The memories it brings back. Some years later I was in a record store in Dublin and saw the CD version of The Innocent Age and i actually bought it for my brother for Christmas. He loved it and it took him back years to memories of a happy home which we have all moved away from over the years. We still live close enough but Dan Fogelberg was a big part of our growing upmin Galway Ireland. Thank you for the Beautiful Music lyrics and most of all Great Memories.. Same old lang Syne will always be a favourite as it always take me back to a guy and a place long gone. I will still play those songs with fondness... Hope the music is good where ever you are. Rip.

I believe it was in 2001, you were in San Diego playing at San Diego State University Outdoor Amptheater. Before the concert started I talked to the gentleman running the board about what module he was using for your vocal effects. He said it was used minimally. After the concert was over an many people had left, my wife and I hung out to see if we could talk with him. I am a musician and lived in San Diego playing at various places in San Diego County. Dan and I talked briefly, I told him I covered many of his songs and hopefully did them justice. Katherine was calm but nervous meeting him. Katherine knew some actors because she worked in her Junior and Senior year at the Old Globe in San Diego. She got to know Christopher Reeves. Dan was unassuming and really just the way people described him, soft spoken. As things would happen, in July of 2002 Katherine was diagnosed with a very bad type of cancer called Primary Peritoneal Carcinoma and she died on August 13, 2002. She also met Dewey and Gerry from America and saw James Taylor play at the same Amphitheater at San Diego State which was probably less than 2 miles away from our home. I am glad she got to meet Dan.

I've been reading Jean's online memoir about her life and time with Dan - All the Time In the World. What a beautiful but tragic love story. I forwarded the link to my sister, also a big fan of Dan, and she is completely hooked on the story and Dan's music (again!) She told me she can't stop listening to him. We both saw him with our friends at Carnegie Hall. What a show. It was just Dan on the stage with his instruments. No props. No gimmicks. Acoustic in Carnegie Hall. I was 17 and my sister was 19. It was the only time I got to see him. I think I picked the best one. I was so obsessed with Dan all through high school and college. I listened to all his albums and loved them equally. I would share at the albums covers for days anytime a new one was released. I'd read every word in the liner notes, and learn every lyric. My family went through some very tough times. Although I had friends, I didn't want to burden them with my problems. Plus, they couldn't relate. So, I found solace in Dan's music, lyrics, artwork. I would share into his eyes in his photos and feel like he was singing directly to me. That was his magic. What made him so special. And why his fans love him, and is music and words. We always will.
We still love you and listen to your music, Dan. Thank you.

I cannot believe how much I still miss the music of Dan Fogelberg ..I just listened to one if his most beautiful songs - one of my favorites - Lonely in Love - and suddenly felt this overwhelming sadness.. My daughter and I went to a couple of his concerts in Canandaigua, NY, and I actually felt chills listening to his wonderful music..He was such a marvelously talented singer, songwriter and my heart is broken that he left "us" so young...Thank You, Dan , for bringing us your wonderfully beautiful songs and music..How fortunate we all were to have known the beauty of your talent..You are so missed..

His overwhelming tribute to his dad is the kind off thankfulness we have forgotten to give to our own parents who without we would be nothing.

I loved his music since my college days back in the 80s all the way back to his first album. I learned to play many of his songs on the guitar. Listening to his music today with much fondness.
