Dan Lee Smith, 88, of Rolling Prairie, Indiana, passed away Friday, August 20, 2021 at Settlers Place in La Porte, IN.

He was born August 10, 1933 in La Porte, Indiana, the son of Paul Andrew Smith and Bessie (Wallace) Smith.

Dan was a graduate of La Porte High School before serving in the United States Navy in the mid-50s.  In 1956, in Door Village, he married the mother of his children, Shirley Evelyn Smith, who preceded him in death November of 1971. They spent 10 years in Seattle, Washington before returning to the La Porte area to be near family. Dan was a member of The1st Christian Church of Rolling Prairie, the Gleaners and the Lions Club, where he was awarded Outstanding Citizen of the Area Award. In his younger years he was a farmer who raised livestock and later a Bakery Supervisor for Roundy's baking division, retiring in 1993. Dan enjoyed gardening, playing cards and checkers and watching WWF wrestling.  He loved ice cream, square dancing and reading his bible.

Dan is survived by his three sons, Phil D. (Pam) Smith of Walkerton, IN, Roger W. (Beth) Smith of Muskegon, MI and Kevin J. (Tammy) Smith of Rolling Prairie, IN; longtime companion, Bonnie Ames of La Porte, IN; brother, Paul (Mary Ann) Smith of La Porte, IN; eight grandchildren, Phyllis (Jamie) Burnett, Teri Vaughan, Amanda (Gabe) Segura, Emily (Phil) Gocke, Jillian Smith, Jackson Smith, Zachary Smith, Skye Smith; five great-grandchildren, Evie, Mali, Charlie, Juni, Sam; several stepchildren, step grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Along with his first wife, Shirley, Dan was preceded in death by his second wife, Wanda; brothers, Perry and Duane Smith; granddaughters, Catherine Givens and Amanda Vaughan.

Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., La Porte, IN where the family will receive friends, Thursday, August 26, 2021 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. and Friday August 27 from 10:00 until service time at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor John Marron, officiating and military honors presented.  Interment will follow at the Door Village Cemetery, LaPorte, Indiana.
