Daniel Canoy Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jun. 18 to Jun. 19, 2008.
LEBANON, Va. — Daniel Phillip Canoy left this life to be with Our Heavenly Father on June 14, 2008 following complications that developed as the result of head trauma he sustained in a recent accident.Daniel was born October 24, 1973 in Bluefield, W.Va., and lived here most of his life. In 2005, he moved to Lebanon, Va. to be a support and help to his mother and grandmother following his grandfather's passing.Daniel was a chef by profession and worked at several restaurants in North Carolina, Florida, West Virginia, and Virginia, with his favorite and most challenging job being at the Hotel Roanoke in Roanoke, Va. When no one else could look in the cabinet or the refrigerator and find anything to eat, Daniel could always prepare a feast out of seemingly nothing.Daniel was a loving, mischievous, funny and loyal person. If you had Daniel as a friend, you had a friend for life.Daniel was preceded in death by one brother, Paul David; his maternal grandfather, Wallace Shrader; and paternal grandparents, Dorothy Smith and Marle Canoy and step-grandfather, John Smith.Daniel leaves behind his loving parents, Phillip and Teresa Shrader Canoy; sister, Susannah Sparks and husband Harold of Bluefield; brother, Nicholas Canoy of Princeton; cherished nephew, Zachary Sparks and beloved dog, Pretzel, as well as numerous family and friends who will miss him immensely, as he was just beginning to live life again and then his life was abruptly cut short.Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, June 19 at 11:00 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bluefield, W.Va. with Father Paul Wharton officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Bluewell with family and friends serving as pallbearers.Friends may call on Wednesday (today), June 18 from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home; where a Christian Wake Service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m.Cravens-Shires Funeral Home in Bluewell is serving the Canoy family. To leave personal condolences online, visit www.legacy.com

Daniel was so gentle and compassionate, and his smile lit up a room. He had a gift with humor and a true talent with cooking. I have so many wonderful memories with Daniel, he was a true-blue friend and I regret losing touch with him. It's unfair that he is gone so soon. My thoughts and prayers are with the family in this tender time. I'm so sorry for your loss.

Some of the most fond memories I have included Daniel grilling mushrooms just right and making jokes. He was a super person and although we haven't talked in several years, his loss leaves an empty space in my heart. Thoughts are with his family.

I am so sorry to hear about Daniel. He was such a special person. He was extremely talented. A wonderful chef, fun friend and cherished soul. I have so many fond memories of growing up with Nick and Daniel. And any trouble Daniel got in with me and Nick was completely our fault (mostly Nick's as I recall, but it was a long time ago). Kathy and I remember the time we were unsuccessfully trying to remove layers of old wallpaper from the house in Bluefield. Daniel told Jason he had an idea and they came back with a sander that would have removed the first two inches of stone from the old city building. However, the results were quick, dusty and perfect, and Daniel kept us laughing the whole time. May God bless your family and get a silly grin on His face when he sees Daniel coming up the walk.

Dearest Teresa and family:

Teresa, I am almost speechless as to what to say to one of my dearest friends. I am beyond shocked to hear of Daniel's death and so are my children, Michael, Kelly Rae and Marc. They all knew Daniel and loved him, as did I. This hit Marc very hard and I am sure he will contact you.

I am praying for the happy repose of Daniel's Soul and for all of you, that God may touch each of you with His healing hand and let you feel His presence during this most difficult time of separation and mourning the loss of your beloved son.

May God turn that mourning into gladness for the years you had your wonderful son in your life. May He only let you see and feel the good and positive side of his life and give you gladness in the fact that he was so accomplished and so loved my many.

Teresa, you and I have spent many hours together, in prayer for our children, and I know God will give you those memories to sustain you and lift you up to know I am beside you, in prayer once again.

Please know how much I love each of you. Do not hesitate to phone me if there is anything I can do to help. My phone number is 540-793-1006.

Peace and Love,
