Daniel Chane Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 31 to Feb. 7, 2012.
Daniel Thurston Chane III. Dan was born July 13th, 1940 in Winchester Massachusetts and died at the Winchester Hospital after a long illness on January 16th, 2012. He was preceded in death by his parents Daniel Thurston Chane Jr., of Gloucester Massachusetts and Vivienne Norma Bryson of Dartmouth Nova Scotia, Canada His is survived by his brother The Right Reverend John Bryson Chane of San Diego California, his sister in law Karen Albright Chane, his nephew Ian Bryson Chane, and wife Megan McMurtry, and their daughters Althea Bryson Chane, and Madeline Mae Chane of West Lynn, Oregon and nephew Christopher Albright Chane and his son Ashton Xavier Chane of Pleasant Hill, California. Dan attended Winchester Public Schools and Winchester High School, graduating as a member of the class of 1958. He was a graduate of the Boston Museum School of Fine Art and did post graduate work in architecture at Nottingham University, Nottingham, England. He was employed by the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, Cambridge, and the architectural firm of J. Piper Ltd., of London, the J.H. Winn Company of Winchester and the Winchester Hospital. He was well known both inside and outside of Winchester as a weekly feature writer for the Winchester Star. His column entitled Winchester Kernels was an important pathway to knowing and understanding the history of Winchester. His column Winchester Kernels was a play on Colonel Winchesters name from whence came the towns naming. Like his father and mother before him, Dan served the town with distinction. He was a long standing member of the Winchester Planning Board and served on the town Cemetery Commission. He was an outspoken advocate for the restoration of the Winchester Town Hall and worked tirelessly for that project as a lead for the towns 150th Anniversary Celebration. Of pride to him and the family was the placement of the weather vane atop the town hall which he paid to have gilded in gold in memory of his fathers many years of service to the town as a town meeting member and a member of the planning board and finance committee. Dan will be remembered as one who cherished the town he grew up in and tried to share his love of its past and present with all who called Winchester their home. With his passing, the town has lost an important part of its connection with Winchesters history and yet he will always be remembered as one who lived the past well without being jaundiced by the rapid changes of the present. His love for town was in his later years mirrored only by his love of his work at Winchester Hospital and the employees, doctors and nurses who cared for him and brought great joy into his life. A Memorial Requiem honoring his life will be celebrated at the Church of the Epiphany, Church Street, Winchester Massachusetts on Saturday, April 28th at 11:00 AM, immediately followed by a reception in the Parish Hall. Those who wish to honor Dan may do so by making a gift to the Capital Campaign Fund of the Church of the Epiphany, Winchester, Massachusetts.

I knew Danny when he was a little boy--his family bought my great aunt's house. And I met up with him again in 1998, when he welcomed my family's interest in keeping it touch with him and "the homestead" at 125 Forest St. Many wonderful visits and letters followed. I will miss him very much.

Danny was a high school chum and a very unique person. Friendly as a pup and seemingly always up to something. Who can forget his old Ford that survived all those years under his care. And the perenial bow tie. The world and I will miss you Danny.

A huge part of Winchester was lost with Dan. He loved his town and the old family home. He was a great friend to all. He will be missed.
