I was in the Michigan Band with Dan and he was always one of my favorite people. We were always hoping he would make it back up the homecoming reunions so we could all visit with him again. I had only recently head of his passing. You have our deepest sympathies and we who knew him from his band years share your loss.

Emma,

I worked with your dad at HCDE for almost 5 years. We came to HCDE about the same time and we had to share an office for almost 2 years. Your dad was so very happy when he found out that your mom was pregnant with you. He was so very proud of you and all of your accomplishments. He always kept us up to date with your life and what you were doing. Your dad and I worked on presenting some workshops together and we always had fun. He was a very special person and I will always remember him in a very special way. As you get older please remember how very much your dad loved you. You were his "angel.

Hello Emma,

I worked and went to school with your dad. He was a wonderful man in every sense of the word. He was funny and helpful and very smart. He would always think about problems from different points of view and that way he could always help us no matter what the problem. He worked very hard getting his doctorate and was very proud of that accomplishment. He and I took more than a dew classes together! Dan was always nice to everyone and made everyone feel comfortable and supported. I am so sorry that you lost your father at such a young age and I am sorry that the Houston science education community lost someone who would have been an inspiring leader for a long long time. I know your mother and your family will take very good care of you, but as you grow up please remember that there are many peole all over Houston, who you don't even know, who love you and are looking forward to helping you in whatever way we can. Love, Tracee

Lisa & Emma:

I do not know you, nor Dan. But please know that your blog has touched my heart. I know that you are a wonderful family. That Dan loved you very much, just as you loved him.

I too, lost my most special person through cancer, but it was long ago. It is so wonderful that you were able to blog your journey for others to follow. It is important. We care. We pray.

God bless you. Rosie

Hi Emma, I'm glad to hear you are doing well. You know every time one of us here at work asked your dad about you, his face would light up, he was always so excited to tell us about the latest mischief you were getting into, when you started potty training. His contagious laugh would always be there in all his stories of you. He was so proud of you. I could tell he just loved to show your latest pictures at his science meetings. Everyone kept up with you as you were growing up. How lucky you and your mom are to have had a wonderful father/husband by your side.

Hi Emma-

I worked with your dad and I, too, know just how MUCH he loved you! He talked about you all of the time. In fact YOU were the main topic he and I ever discussed. I sometimes managed to get a word in about my daughter who is also your age. I even know that you and I share the same birthday because of conversations I had with your dad about you. Always remember that he loved you dearly and deeply. That's what matters most. Keep that with you for the rest of your life. As a parent, I know that it had to be important to him that you know that in his absence. Take care and continue to make him proud of you!

Emma:

Your father was a funny guy. Once in a meeting with lots of important people who were wearing suits with neck ties and dresses with sensible shoes, he started saying things, not mean at all, that made me have to hold my breath so I would not laugh out loud and probably get into trouble. He loved you lots and lots. For the short, few years I knew your dad, he always had new photos of you he wated to show; he was very proud of you. I hope as you are reading all these you remember the love your dad had for both you and your mother. Smile when you think of him.

Dan was an inspiration for me in the science field. He brought an energy and a love for his students to the classroom. I was honored to attend some workshops he presented to the HCDE staff in 2002. He will surely be missed. He was also a loving, doting father. I was pregnant at the time of the workshops and he just glowed with joy over Emma and shared her pictures with me. Emma, your Daddy adored and loved you with all of his heart.

Dan was truly one of a kind. We had some really special times together back in Ann Arbor and at the family "Chateau" in Ontario. He was a great friend and will always be loved.

After reading previous posts, I am struck by how many lives and hearts Dan has touched in his too-short years. Former students whose lives were changed by Dan's passion for science and learning, and his caring for each of his students is remarkable. When he came to Harris County Department of Education, he only magnified this effect by being able to reach even more people. Although he will be missed, his legacy will surely live on.

I graduated from HSEP in 2000, which means that I had Felske's Biology class my sophomore year (1998-1999). I had always disliked Biology, but Mr. Felske made it quite interesting and enjoyable. He was always jovial. He also really cared about his students and made sure that we learned...a lot. We will truly miss him, and your family will be in our prayers.

I would like to extend my sympathy to the entire family. Dr. Felske was my high school biology teacher at Booker T. Washington/HSEP. His class was always filled with an excitement and joy for learning. Dr. Felske was one of the few teachers that could really fit in and relate to his students and he made it enjoyable to learn from him. He will truly be missed, but his memory will live on forever through his family and the many students that he left an impression on.

I was overcome with sorrow when I heard about Mr. Felske, but then I thought about the glorius life he had lived when he was here. He was my homeroom teacher for four years at Booker T. Washington and has had a great impact on who I have become as a person. Not only was he a wonderful role model, he was a very good friend. Mr. Felske was a teacher you could be yourself around, he related to his students which made the learning experience more enjoyable. He will be truly missed. I will keep the family in my prayers and thoughts.

From dust of the earth

... we were brought forward....

To pass our time …… in service …….. to humanity...to god in our heart…..and in our lives…

To the dust of the earth shall we retire…

…once our time is served..

To realize and love your purpose..

A purpose to live…

…..is but a gift

...offered to man..

May you pick up the mantel

…..of service…..

….. and live your life ….

With love in your heart

…..with purpose the sweat upon your brow

… and desire the strength in your hands..

To serve, to teach, to love…

That is what we can give…..

For those so lucky…

…. to have known you…

……..In your time upon this earth….

Your efforts will live on in our hearts…..

….As surely your memory will……..

And to those that love you..

May the breath of life blossom in our hearts.. and help us to realize..

love and purpose...

as we continue on....

.... may we have strength and peace....

as we exist to continue the dream...

Mr. D. Felske will always be in my heart and prayers. May his family be strong and I will keep you all in my prayers. It was an adventure to cross the path of Mr. Felske on my long journey through high school; he was one of the many of teachers who cared and showed it. His legacy will live on through his daughter and his memories of his teaching will progress and shine through all the students he educated. C/O 98' BTW/HSEP

My deepest sympathies on your loss. Dr Felske was my Science teacher back in 1984. I will always remember his great sense of humor and how he cared just as much about how his students were feeling as he did about how well we were doing in class. Now that I am a teacher, I often find my self emulating his example in my own classroom.

He will be missed.
