Daniel Kurtz Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jun. 23 to Jun. 30, 2019.
August 28, 1946 - June 8, 2019
Daniel Kurtz, OD, PhD, passed away at his home surrounded by his children, after a battle with cancer. He was a devoted father, educator and friend, known for his wry (often corny) humor and skeptical mind.
Born in Charleston, WV, Dan graduated from Oberlin College and served in the Navy for four years before completing his PhD at the University of Michigan, followed by his Doctor of Optometry at the New England College of Optometry. Dr. Kurtz later joined the faculty and earned tenure there, contributing through his dedicated teaching, scholarship, clinical care and service. He served as the President of the Massachusetts Society of Optometrists; he was a principal investigator in the landmark NEI-funded Correction of Myopia Evaluation Trial (COMET); and he co-authored the widely used textbook Clinical Procedures for Ocular Examination. Dr. Kurtz helped found an optometry clinic at the New England Shelter for Homeless Veterans, and he lectured throughout Africa, South America, and Europe. In 2007, Dr. Kurtz joined the founding team at Western University of Health Sciences to establish the College of Optometry as the first Associate Dean of Academic Affairs.
Dan's pride and joy were his children, three with Nancy Coffin Kurtz and one with Lynne A. Silvers. In Southern California, Dan fostered his love for succulent plants, xeriscaping his front lawn with aloes and converting his backyard to a cherished "oasis." He was an active member of the Democratic Club of Rancho Cucamonga and loved debating politics and social issues. A staunch fan of the Boston Red Sox, Dan also remained loyal to his first team, the Dodgers, whom he followed from Brooklyn to L.A.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents Abraham and Rose Kurtz and beloved wife Lynne Silvers. He is survived by brother Peter and Marcia Kurtz, children Esther Kurtz and Ben Dicke, Adam Kurtz and Ashley Richardson, Nathan Kurtz and Michael Jao, and Kyra Silvers, as well as nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers please send donations to the Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance (https://ocrahope.org/) or to your local chapter of the Democratic Party.
A public memorial will be held for Dr. Kurtz at 3 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 2, at the Western University of Health Sciences Health Education Center (follow signage), in Pomona, CA.

Dan and I were college roommates for 3 out of four years. We graduated about this time, 57 years ago. We both went into the military for 4 years after receiving our draft notices. I attended both of his weddings. So sorry he died so young as I know he still had much to give to his friends and family.

On this anniversary, I look at the picture of Dan, and feel the manifestation of the beautiful life he shared with me, as if he were present. I´ll never forget when he hired me to be the Nanny of his beautiful children; they were a blessing in my life and memories! For several years one of my duties was to cook weekly dinner for the family: I was a young man in graduate school with no culinary background. Dan NEVER ONCE complained about my cooking!!! He was gracious and thanked me after every meal. Thank you, Dan, for all you did being a beaker of light as I transitioned through graduate school and into professional setting!

A Wonder Man who raised beautiful children. I am shocked and saddened. I was a Nanny to Dan's children and have always cherished the memories.

Your family will be held in the hearts and thoughts of many as you mourn the loss of your Dad. Our roots go back to the sophomore year at SJHS in Charleston, WV and second year Latin class in the room of Lillian Bush. A serious student, he also enjoyed getting under her skin on occasion. We swam at EPI in the summers. We became closer when Rose, Abe and Dan hosted AFS student Mats Lindquist our senior years. After high school we all went our separate ways with only occasional contact. However, as I get ready to attend the 55th reunion of the SJHS Class of 64 this weekend, I will recall fondly the memories of the reunions that he attended with Lynn Silvers before Kyra was born when he took her around his childhood haunts and then in 2014 when he celebrated not only his past but all the accomplishments he achieved in the years after high school. Most importantly know that he considered you, his children, his greatest legacy.
