Daniel Moeller Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Nov. 6 to Nov. 13, 2016.
December 6, 1942 - October 25, 2016 Daniel Amos Moeller died October 25, 2016 at the age of 73 at his home in Manhattan Beach after a two-year battle with pancreatic cancer. Daniel's faith and courage in combatting his illness allowed him to maintain a quality of life that seemed remarkable to all who knew him. He died surrounded by friends, a loving caregiving team led by Sharon Rochford, RN, and with his beloved poodle Chloe by his side. Daniel was born December 6, 1942 in Waverly, Iowa, the only child of Erhard and Geraldine Moeller. Growing up Daniel worked in F.F. Moeller's General Store in Waverly, which was founded at the turn of the 20th century by his grandparents Fred F. and Minnie Moeller and later run by his parents. He attended grade schools in his home town of Denver, Iowa and went on to Wartburg College in Waverly, receiving his B.A. in English in 1965. Daniel attended graduate school at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. His first teaching position was at Clear Lake High School in Iowa. In 1969 he left Clear Lake to continue his graduate studies at the University of Minnesota and also began teaching in Bloomington, Minnesota. In 1984 Daniel moved to Hermosa Beach, California and found a teaching position in the English Department at Huntington Park High School where he remained until he retired in 2002. By that time he had moved to a gated community in neighboring Manhattan Beach where he lived happily with his standard black poodle Chloe until his death. Daniel was a faithful and active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Manhattan Beach. His pastor, Luther Martell, was a regular visitor during his illness. He was also a dedicated film buff. For years he was a regular at the Monday Night Reel Talk Film Screenings with Stephen Farber in West Los Angeles. He and his good friend Don Shaw went with their respective poodles to the Palm Springs Film Festival every year, and in addition Daniel attended film festivals in New York, San Sebastian, Istanbul, Buenos Aires, and Telluride, Colorado. Physical activity was important to Daniel. He was a runner, a swimmer, a regular at the gym and, because of Chloe a dedicated dog walker. He and Chloe had many friends in Manhattan Village where they lived and the two of them will be missed. Chloe has gone to live with Don Shaw and Don's new puppy Noah. Daniel was a kind and friendly man who loved most of all his dog, his flowers, and his home. He will be fondly remembered by all who knew him. Services for Daniel will be held on Saturday, November 19th at 2PM at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1340-11th Street, Manhattan Beach 90266. A reception will follow at the church. Graveside services will take place at a later date in Harlington Cemetery in Waverly Iowa next to his parents' grave. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, 1500 Rosecrans Ave., Suite 200, Manhattan Beach, CA 90266

Mr. Moeller as I knew him came to mind recently from a funny memory I had of him as a 9th grade English student back in 1995. Two other students and myself did not do our homework and he had us call our parents to inform them lol. Needless to say I never missed a homework assignment again. Great teacher that was passionate about teaching. In hindsight his class felt college to university level. Googled him out of curiosity and found myself on this page. Great teacher that impacted my education in a very positive manner.

He was the consummate gentleman. And a quiet inspiration, certainly to me. He will be missed.

It's strange how one's memory works. I, too, remember Dan as a dedicated and very competent instructor in Bloomington. He also was a great colleague. But the one vivid image I have of Dan was his car. He had a big, long coupe with an option I'd never seen. When he opened the driver door, the seat would pivot and turn outward to make it easier to get in and out. Quite a nice feature for someone as tall as he was.
My sympathy to his friends and family.

Daniel lived a few doors down from me since 2002. I got to know him through walking our dogs. He was a gentle and kind soul; always friendly and with a great sense of humor. I miss him.
