Darya FARHA Obituary
March 24, 1965 - November 16, 2011
We are heartbroken to announce the death of our beloved Darya on November 16th , from metastatic breast cancer. Darya's spirit will be carried forward by so many: partner Maarten Van Wyk; parents Fred Lafi Farha and Marina Kun (Stefan Pisosky); sisters Soraya Farha (Frank McLaughlin), Juliana Farha (Kit Malthouse), and Leilani Farha (David Wiseman); nephews and nieces Ben, Jamie and Gemma McLaughlin, Ruby and Hayden Malthouse, and Cleo and Luke Farha; stepmother Fee Hughes and half-siblings LT and Aleka Farha; dear friends Janieta Eyre (daughter Sadie, and Kunga Sherab), Julia Gotz, and Gabrielle Pop-Lazic (Markita Fleming); her many other friends, and her cat Squeak. Darya was a poet, artist, teacher, youth worker, clothes designer, film maker, and Gestalt therapist. She was profoundly sensitive and empathetic and had a brilliant mind. Perhaps Darya's greatest gifts were her capacity to form deep connections and to accept people as they are. Darya felt she received excellent medical care. Special thanks to Dr. Robert Dinniwell of PMH, Dr. Maureen Trudeau of Sunnybrook-Odette, Dr. Lorraine Wood of Mt. Sinai, and Dr. Mark Clemons. Our family is grateful for Cristina Marra's friendship and loving care of Darya.
Visitation will take place at Mt. Pleasant Visitation Centre, 375 Mt. Pleasant Road (East Gate entrance) Toronto, (416) 485-5572 on Saturday, November 19th from 4:00-7:00 pm. The funeral will be held in the Visitation Centre Chapel on Sunday November 20 at 11:00 am. Please visit www.etouch.ca for details and condolences. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the National Ballet of Canada and the Canadian Centre for Victims of Torture.

Lest I forget…. The hour, 6.22 am, November 16, 2011, I am with you every hour of every day from the moment your beautiful sole left my world.
If it is the heavens my darling, I have built a highway of yellow roses to reach you, my tears are its dew at this early hour of your departure, that now I am joined.
Your journey, was a short journey amongst us, unfairly short my Dar, it was full of love smiles, laughter tenderness, love for life, giving of the special generous you, to have made and left for us, a make belief world of beauty, even during your darkest hour of unbelievable pains, you did not allow pain to conquer.
Your will to live, just a little longer you said to me…. “I love spring dad”, you told me…. “I love Christmas dad”… a shorter time it was…. and then again it was curly denied… oh Dar, you left us many memorable sweet springs to remember with you, I will celebrate with you, in my heart… every Charismas, I will light a candle and bring it closer to my face for you to see my pain … I miss you so very much my darling,

I am really sorry to hear of Darya's death. I have not seen Darya since our graduation in 1987 but I remember her clearly. I very much enjoyed our classes together, our chats to and from class, and getting to know Darya. She was a wonderful source of support and a unique person.

I never had the pleasure of meeting Darya but being roommates with her sister, Aleka, for years made me feel like I already knew her. My thoughts are with the Farha family, it's never easy to lose a loved one at such a young age. She no longer has to suffer and she will definitely not be forgotten.

My husband Dr. Brian Bustard and I are very sad to learn of Darya's passing. We knew her at the Gestalt Institute. Darya taught me a joyful delight in movement and dance. She had a full-on enthusiasm and innocence and danced with such infectious joy. I found that she was able to connect with me on a deep level through movement and I thank her for it.

I met Darya in 2002 when I spent six months in Toronto. I came back home with a feeling that I had a friend there in Canada and I felt very sorry when I knew that she was ill. I am glad that I could meet her again on June 2011 when she was as nice as ever despite the fact that she felt badly. I still feel I have a friend in Toronto.

I am shocked and saddened today to hear of Darya's passing. She was a good friend in school. I remember her quiet spoken words and sense of peacefulness. She had a self-assuredness that only comes with incredible self confidence and was always beside me when my own confidence failed. A funny memory: we both had to wear those horrible ugly black "hockey-puck" retainers at the same time. It was only due to the fact that Darya couldn't care less what anyone thought that I found the courage to grin with my "rubber grill" right along side of her. And thus, to this day, I have Darya to thank for my perfect smile! Darya had a beautiful smile too - from the inside. She will be missed. My sincerest condolences.

Marina, Fred, Soraya, Juliana, Leilani, Maarten and families - I was deeply saddened yesterday by the news of Darya's passing. Just thinking of her brought back such fond memories of our lives as little girls growing up on Rosewood. Being the only girl in my family, I still remember how thrilled I was when I heard that 4 girls were moving in right across the street! If I close my eyes, I can still see us in our green Elmwood uniforms, Darya with her lovely long brown hair, with Arrow running laps around us. Although my memories of Darya are limited to childhood, I vividly remember an incredible sense of elegance and maturity about her even when she was just a little girl. My heart goes out to all of you at this incredibly painful time. We will keep your family in our thoughts and prayers.

I met Darya while she was a member of the Fresh Collective in Toronto. I was fortunate to spend a few days in the shop with her and even though we didn't know each other well, it was very easy to talk to and connect with her. Darya was incredibly kind and creative. I'm so sorry for your loss.

At those brief times when I saw Darya, I was always struck by her radiance and peacefulness. She really seemed to enjoy her life and her relationships. Dear Family: I was shocked and saddened to read of Darya's passing. We were good friends at school and growing up in Whitehaven. I will be forever grateful to Darya for helping me pass physics class. She was so smart ! I remember her taking me to a dance at Elmwood and introducing me to all those Ashbury boys. Although we have not been in touch for many years, I will always remember Darya as a beautiful, intelligent and kind friend. My heart aches for all of you.
