David Bechtel Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 10, 2025.
David Ross Bechtel, Master Chief (Ret.), passed away peacefully at his home in San Diego, California, on December 11, 2024, at the age of 87.

David was born on August 14, 1937, in Seattle, Washington. At the age of 11, he moved to San Francisco, where he spent his formative years before joining the United States Navy. David proudly served his country for an impressive 32 years, rising to the rank of Master Chief. His time in the Navy was a source of great pride and fulfillment.

After retiring from military service, David pursued higher education at the University of San Diego, earning a business degree. He also worked briefly with the U.S. Border Patrol for two years.

David married Shirley, his beloved wife of 56 years, and together they built a life filled with love and adventure in San Diego. They shared a passion for traveling and outdoor activities. David was an avid cyclist and swimmer who participated in numerous triathlons and even biked across the country-a testament to his adventurous spirit and determination.

David is survived by his two children from a previous marriage, Toby and Tanya; his sister Deanna; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many cherished in-laws. He was predeceased by his brother Doug.

David's legacy is one of dedication-to his family, his country, and his passions. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

May his memory bring comfort to those who loved him and inspire others to live with the same sense of purpose and adventure that defined his remarkable life.

To Shirley and family,
Uncle Dave was a great man who contributed to many young men and women's futures with his witty advice and a dash of sarcasm that always helped us see the big picture. He was a great Husband to aunt Shirley and treated everyone with a fair dose of respect and kindness... I will miss his bigger then life personality and highly respected his accomplishments and a lifelong military man and veteran. Rest in Peace Uncle Dave... May you find Fair Winds and Follow Seas...
Love and Prayers to all his family who mourn his passing.
