David Berg Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 21, 2025.
David Benjamin Berg of Rocky Hill, CT passed away at the age of 67 on February 18th in Port St. Lucie, Florida after battling cancer for a year and a half.

David was born on April 20, 1957 in Rahway, New Jersey to Abe and Bess (Melnick) Berg (both deceased). He was the youngest of four children, with older sisters Carol (Sherling; deceased), Diane, and Eileen (Schreibman; deceased). David grew up playing checkers, chess, basketball, and tennis, and – according to him – walking to school uphill in the snow and rain both ways.

David attended Rutgers University where he studied mathematics and forged lasting friendships. He often regaled stories to his family of his classes and the high marks he received during his studies. His children would quickly remind him of his failed attempt at student teaching so that his ego wouldn't get too high.

After college, David moved to Connecticut where he started and ended his 35-year career at Aetna in the actuarial program, working his way up to become the Head of Underwriting, National Accounts before retiring at the end of 2014. It was through his work that he made lifelong friends, and where he met his wife, Janice, on a ski trip with mutual friends in 1986. Luckily for David, they got stuck on the ski lift together, and the rest is history.

David and Janice married on September 4, 1988 in a multi-faith ceremony in Providence, Rhode Island. They honeymooned in Hawaii, which David would later claim was his second favorite trip – his first was a trip he took with his son, Andrew, to San Antonio, TX, in 2004 to watch UConn men's basketball in the Final Four.

While David was known for his love of math, golf, joking around, and chocolate, his greatest joy in life was his family. He was the biggest cheerleader – often embarrassingly so – for his three children, Jennifer, Andrew, and Samantha. He shared his interests with them while also encouraging them to pursue their own passions – although he was relieved when all three of them excelled in math.

Though he worked hard to take his family on special trips over the years, David was happy with any time he could spend with them. A man who appreciated routine, David valued his evenings with Janice catching up on their many shows, playing card games with their friends, or going out for fro-yo – chocolate topped with M&Ms. He spoke regularly with his sister, Diane, who always kept him in supply of Entenmann's chocolate donuts and peanut M&Ms despite his relentless teasing.

David enjoyed playing games with his wife and children, always requesting that the board face him, and taking extra pleasure whenever he beat Jen, his ultimate competitor. He loved watching sports with Andrew and visiting ballparks with him across the country. He even begrudgingly delighted in watching horror movies with Sam, often laughing at the jump scares. David was ecstatic to welcome Jack into the family when Jen and Jack married in August 2023. We will forever cherish the memories of David walking Jen down the aisle and sharing a father-daughter dance. And he couldn't wait to become a grandfather this March.

David is survived by his wife, Janice (Alfano) Berg; his children, Jennifer and her husband Jack, Andrew, and Samantha; his sister Diane Wions; 11 nieces and nephews, as well as their partners and children; his beloved dog Ziva; and a mountain of friends and extended family. His wit, silliness, and expansive heart will be missed by all.

Memorial services will be held on September 28 from 2-5pm at the Wethersfield Country Club. In lieu of flowers and gifts, please consider making a donation to the American Cancer Society, Treasure Coast Hospice, the ALS Association, or the National Math Foundation.

I am sorry to hear of Dave's passing. I worked with Dave many years at Aetna where he challenged us all to thoughtful financial discussions over many accounts. Dave was remarkably cool and calm and always had his financial points lined up ready to go. I have fond memories of Dave and this discussions, I was sad to see him retire from Aetna and I am sad to see he has passed, he will be missed but our memories will stay in our hearts and his families hearts forever.

I had the good fortune to become a roommate of Dave at Rutgers University, where we enjoyed basketball, among many other activities. Dave was a kind, caring, and simply wonderful man at that time & I'm certain he never lost those positive traits. I was also lucky to reconnect with Dave after many years and his enduring kindness shone thru despite his illness. My condolences to his wife, family, and all his friends.

As former neighbors of David´s sister Diane, we visited with David and family multiple times as they visited Diane. We enjoyed the close knit family, their openness and sense of humor. David was the ring leader in this or should I say Ring Master. He was also very supportive of his big sisters and we were front and center to his support of Diane and her husband Joe´s long medical issues. We also shared his love of M&M´s. David´s big smile and laugh will be missed.

Maggie and I are missing Dave and always will. He would consistently share a smile and a joke. I was his first manager at Aetna. I could claim some mentoring but that would take too much credit. Dave´s talent and effort earned his success. The best thing I did was make a friend. The best thing Dave did was to marry Jann. We tried to play bridge but we failed somehow. I recall a chocolate chip cookie baking contest. He and I looked forward to the annual Aetna Actuarial Literary Society event. (Details are unavailable). We all enjoyed graduation parties and wedding receptions. Dave and I attended many Whalers games. We decided to visit Major League Baseball parks. For several years we took a week to travel to 3 or 4 stadiums. Andrew came with us and we had a blast. When I was interviewing and transitioning to a job in Hartford Dave and Jann took me in. One could say Dave´s sense of humor was distinctive. It was silly, teasing, and infectious. Our daughter Elizabeth was a "victim". Dave reeled her in and they would go back and forth. Elizabeth´s birthday is December 12. When she was eleven she spent the year chanting to Dave "I´m going to be 12 on 12/12!" Dave pretended annoyance but he loved it. Fast forward about thirty years. Elizabeth is living in Pittsburgh raising four kids. Maggie and I moved to Pittsburgh to live on their street. Dave and Jann came to visit. Elizabeth was looking forward to introducing her kids to Dave. He didn´t disappoint and engaged with all of them. Child number three, Mary, reacted most strongly to his humor. She was about eleven and went back and forth with Dave. Suddenly she started calling Dave "Derek". Mary told him his name is now Derek. Dave loved this. He said well your name is Derek, and also your older siblings and your younger sister is little Derek! (I think he embraced this so didn´t have to remember all their names). Fast forward a few more years. When Elizabeth heard the recent terrible news she sat for an hour and cried. And that´s all I have to say about that.

I worked for Dave in Aetna Actuarial for quite a few years and interacted with him often when he moved on to National Accounts Underwriting. Dave treated his employees with the utmost respect. He created a really enjoyable atmosphere to work in with his great sense of humor. He had a keen mind beyond the math in Actuarial with negotiating skills that served him well in Underwriting. Dave will be missed by all. I am so sorry to hear of his passing.

I knew Dave for many years while working at his dental office. I always enjoyed seeing his name in the schedule because I knew I´d soon have someone to banter with as well as a Dunkin Donuts coffee in my hand, he always brought coffee in for us at the front desk . He was a wonderful man and will be missed but fondly remembered

I only knew Dave through golf at Tallwood Country Club in Hebron CT. I signed up to play with him whenever he had an opening in his foursome because I could be certain of two things. First, he could always be counted on to keep score - it was a given that he never made a mistake - and, second, he was always pleasant, making the round enjoyable. In the many years I played with him, I can never remember a time when we finished and shook hands that he didn't smile and thank me for playing along side of him, telling me how much fun he had, and I genuinely felt the same.

Dave, you are deeply missed. We only had the good fortune of sharing more recent years with you, but they were meaningful and memorable. It´s unlikely we will ever meet anyone with your sense of humor and we smile just thinking of your wit and dry sense of humor. You made a difference Dave. You taught us how to express our love for our friends openly and how to face adversity with both courage and vulnerability. Thank you for trusting us to share the last few years with you. We wish we could have had many more years with you. We feel an overwhelming sadness at not being able to have more conversation with you. Jim feels blessed to have played your last round of golf with you. Our deepest sympathies to Jann and Dave´s family. He always spoke of all of you with so much love and pride. Dave, you are loved and will always be deeply missed.

May you rest in peace Dave. You were always one of the "good" ones in finance... reasonable, funny, honest, and not afraid to call BS when it was necessary. Thank you for the memories.

Jan, Jen, Andrew and Samantha, Our hearts are broken and sadden by hearing the news of your Dads passing. He was always a positive and upbeat person who enjoyed the jokes. Such a beautiful tribute you have written which encapsulates his personality to a tee. May you treasure those memories and hold them close to your heart to cherish.

Jann & kids, we are so sorry for the loss of a very special person, your husband & Dad. We met Dave at PGA when he & Jann bought a house here. Dave took over the challenge of running the Weds/Sat golf group which my husband joined. Over the past few years we got to know Dave & Jann pretty well, always a fun time when we got together. Dave had such a wit about him & sense of humor. He fought hard with this terrible disease only to be taken from all of us. We will never forget you Dave, rest in peace our friend. Sharyn & Pat
