David Crooks Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 6, 2025.

David William Crooks, age 77, passed away peacefully on July 22, 2025, at his Northern Michigan home surrounded by family. David was born May 6, 1948, in Fort Thomas, Kentucky to his loving parents the late James Crooks and Virginia Crooks, nee Scott. A devoted son, husband, father, grandfather, and friend, David's life was a masterclass in leadership, humor, and wholehearted living.

David developed his work ethic early in life. A proud Bluebird at Highlands High School (KY), he was a standout on both the football and track teams, a member of two football state championship teams. At Denison University, David continued his athletic journey playing lacrosse, football and running track while shining academically.

After marrying his high school sweetheart, Donna Jo Crooks, nee Dudderar, David began law school at Vanderbilt University before joining the U.S. Air Force. In the Air Force David flew the B-52 Stratofortress and earned his call sign "Darby," a name that would live on through his grandchildren. After his service, he completed his law degree and launched a legal career in Grand Rapids, Michigan before settling in Cadillac, Michigan working for The Kysor Industrial Corp. until retirement in 1997.

David and Jo built a loving home on Lake Mitchell where they raised their children-Clay (Carrie), Ethan (Brittany), and Hayne (James). David could always be found at his kids' countless sporting events, where he indulged his love of photography. David and Jo's southern hospitality was constantly on display, hosting numerous, music-filled parties, team dinners and bocce ball tournaments throughout the years.

After their children left home, David and Jo split their time between Naples, Florida and Traverse City, Michigan. In Naples, David was a proud member of the Forum Club, an organization committed to supporting local high school students. A caring grandfather, "Darby" loved seeing his 11 grandchildren and hearing about their ever-changing activities, instilling in them the importance of family.

Following Jo's passing in December 2018, David was blessed to find love again with Barbara Crooks, nee Johnson, who he married in 2021. David and Barb enjoyed precious years filled with friendship, laughter, and a lot of dancing.

David is preceded in death by his parents, brother Scott Crooks, and first wife Donna Jo Crooks. He is survived by his wife, three children, 11 grandchildren and his brother Douglas Crooks.

David's smile, laughter, kindness and love for life will be missed. A celebration of life will be scheduled at a later date in Naples.
