David Deci Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 12, 2017.
David Deci, 88, died Thursday, May 11, 2017 at Florida Hospital Orlando following a long journey with vascular dementia.
He leaves his beloved wife of 67 years, Rosalie (Grella) Deci, his son, David Deci (Diane) of Madison, WI; his son, Paul Deci (Marguerite) of Orlando, FL; and his daughter, Ellen Nimmons (William) of Tallahassee, FL. He also leaves behind six wonderful grandchildren and one great granddaughter.
Born and raised in Syosset, NY, he was predeceased by his parents, Andrew and Stella Deci, and his brother, John Deci.
David's curiosity and thirst for knowledge in his early years led him to a variety of careers after graduation from Hicksville High School, Hicksville, NY. From potato farming on Long Island as a child, to bank teller, to owner of a trucking business, David constantly challenged himself. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict as a weapon systems electronics technician. Following the Korean Conflict, David was employed by Grumman Aircraft for 19 years as an avionics technician and supervisor which led to the relocation of his family to Jensen Beach, FL. After several years of small business ownership, he became a founding member of St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church in Jensen Beach and served as the parish's business manager until his retirement.
David had a passion for community service throughout his entire life. He started early as a volunteer fireman on Long Island and continued his service in Florida as a member and president of the Jensen Beach Chamber of Commerce, member of the Martin County Water Utility Board, and member of the Optimist Club. He became a member of the Boy Scouts of America in 1941 and returned to scouting in 1963 serving as cubmaster, neighborhood commissioner, and district commissioner for the Gulfstream Council. He was recognized as a member of the Order of the Arrow and received the Scouter's Key Award for his dedication and service. His influence extended to his family with his two sons and three grandsons achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. Church volunteerism was in David's heart as he served over the years in several roles including altar server, usher, Eucharistic minister, building fund chairman, thrift store organizer, and delivery volunteer for the DARE food program.
His hobbies included civic engagement, rosary making for overseas missions, crossword puzzles, and computers.
Funeral services will be held at Aycock Funeral Home, Fort Pierce with visitation at 10:30 am and the funeral service at 11 am. Committal service will immediately follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens adjacent to Aycock Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to your favorite charity.

It has been an honor to know David. I worked with him in the DARE program (dignify all remaining empty) . He enriched my life by his dedication to those in need.
