David Dunaway Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 28, 2021.
DUNAWAY, David William, 64, passed away in Richmond on Friday, April, 23, 2021. He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel Mayhu Dunaway and Frances (Price) Dunaway; his sister, Sarah (Dunaway) Thomas; and his nephew, John Dunaway. He is survived by his wife, Isa Dunaway; his sons, Chris Dunaway (Jaime) and Lars Dunaway (Anna); his grandchildren, Elliot and Mayhew Dunaway; his brothers, Samuel Dunaway (Sharon) and James Dunaway (Nan); his nephew, Eric Dunaway; and his niece, Eitel Dunaway. In the late 1970s, David worked for seven months on a kibbutz in Israel and spent another four months hitchhiking through Europe with only a suitcase and a banjo. It was while hitchhiking in Denmark that he met his wife of 41 years, Isa. He received a B.S. in Horticulture from Virginia Tech and spent his entire career working in that field. David loved cultivating plants, cheap bottle rockets, road trips, napping in any available hammock, gospel music and roughhousing with dogs. He was especially proud of his family, most of all his grandchildren. He volunteered as an ESL teacher for many years and developed deep friendships with several of his students, who were refugees from the Middle East. He was always on the hunt for remarkable trees (which, to his family, looked like every other tree they had ever seen). David believed deeply that he had received generous kindness and mercy from Jesus, and he eagerly treated others with the same kindness and mercy. Family and friends will be received at Crestwood Presbyterian Church, 6627 Jahnke Road, Richmond, Va. 23225 on Friday, April 30, 5 to 7 p.m. A memorial service will be held at Crestwood Presbyterian Church, 6627 Jahnke Road, Richmond, Va. 23225 on Saturday, May 1, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Bethlehem Bible College, bethbc.edu/support-the-college; or Palestine Children's Relief Fund, pcrf.net.

I knew Dave from our high school days. We reconnected in the 90's through church. He was one one the nicest guys I've ever known. Isa and family, I'm so very sorry. God bless.

David was one of my favorite friends from our college years at Virginia Tech. I remember the good times we had at Poverty Creek in Blacksburg. I hit the golf balls while he played the banjo. We both loved our plants and trees. I am so grateful for our friendship. I know he will be deeply missed by all of his family. I have a tree for you, Isa, in memory of David.

I am shocked and deeply saddened to hear that Dave has died.
We were close friends in college who played music together any chance we could.
We lost track of each other when I was living on the west coast, but renewed our friendship (he found me somehow lol) when I returned to the east coast to help my elderly parents in poor health.
I also thought we´d have more time to talk and see more music festivals together... I hate knowing that will no longer be possible.
Good man. Good friend. Great loss :(

On behalf of the Danish Club of Va of which both David and Isa were charter members some 35 years ago, we offer sincere condolences to Isa and the whole family. Also personal condolences from my husband Mourad and myself. David was the most interesting person to carry on a conversation with.

Isa, Chris, and Lars... Jim and Sam... As you well know, words cannot begin to express the depth of emotion felt for David-husband, father, brother, cousin, friend...Christian! Hearts Breaking, Tears Flowing- yet with Joy able to say not "Goodbye"-but rather, "Until we met in Heaven with our families reunited once again"... May The Lord give us His Peace and His Comfort until that Glorious Day that we are gathered together with Jesus, our Lord and Savior! While miles may have separated us physically, our Heart in Love have always bonded us together... We will continue to be in prayer for you. We Love You Guys~~Cousins from the "Deep South" (David Understands), Billy & Rosie
