Houston - David Andrew Edmonson (59), beloved son, brother, uncle, colleague, and friend, died on May 6, 2025, in Houston, Texas. A staunch defender of LGBTQ rights, Edmonson was a defining advocate of Houston gay politics, a media-savvy exponent of the arts, and a vocal ally of the dispossessed and marginalized. Born in Knoxville, Tennessee, on October 23,1965, to public school educators and community activists Carl and Emma Blankenship Edmonson, Andrew graduated from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, in 1989 with a degree in English comparative literature and a lifelong passion for the theater. He took a year and a half off to travel to London and Dublin, where he "came out." He said he felt free to be himself: "My world really opened up." In 1990, he moved to Houston and worked at the Alley Theatre as public relations manager. From 1993 to 2014, he joined the Houston Ballet and held the positions of PR associate, then PR manager, and finally the company's director of marketing and public relations. Houston Ballet was one of his great loves. Andrew was renowned in Houston's arts organizations for his expertise in marketing and communications. In 2014 he joined the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, as membership manager. But his political activism had been in full swing years before. After the July 1991 murder of young banker Paul Broussard in Houston's gay district, Andrew joined Queer Nation, which would successfully protest Anita Bryant and the Republican National Convention. As he said in a 2019 OutSmart Magazine interview, "Queer Nation taught me what it's like to be an outsider...they taught me how to be brave." A prolific writer, he wrote numerous articles on gay issues, politics, and theater news for The Houston Chronicle, OutSmart Magazine, Houston Voice, and Houston Ballet News. He received the Award of Special Merit from the Texas chapter of the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association. He was co-chair of the 1999 and 2000 Houston Gay and Lesbian Film Festival; and was humbled and thrilled to be chosen as the 2023 Honorary Grand Marshall of Houston's Pride Parade and was recognized by then Mayor Sylvester Turner. He was an early supporter of Halloween Magic, whose charity benefits supported Body Positive, a local group devoted to helping AIDS sufferers, and served on the board of the Houston chapter of the American Marketing Association. As a member of oH Project, an oral history that documented the personal devastation of the AIDS crisis in Houston, the organization would receive a Mastermind Award from the Houston Press for its service to the gay community. He also worked with The Human Rights Campaign. Andrew was ceaseless in his support of LGBTQ causes and fought tirelessly for their continued success and to keep their demands in the public eye. Intelligent, full of wit and charm, and a lovely, caring man, Andrew gave all to whatever project called for his guidance and assistance. "In my personal life, my passion for the last twenty-five years has been to fight for the civil rights of LGBT Americans." He enjoyed traveling to London, Berlin, Paris, NOLA, NY, and Palm Springs. In his final days, his innate dignity, courage, and love of life never failed him. Andrew found thirty successful years of sobriety. Andrew is survived by his devoted sister, Sally Edmonson, nephew Jackson Scoggins; and niece, Stormie Juenger. A memorial service will be held at Bradshaw-Carter Funeral Home, 1734 W Alabama St. in Houston, for Five until eight o'clock in the evening on Thursday, June 12, 2025. For those that cannot make it in person, a livestream link will be available at www.bradshawcarter.com. In honor of Andrew, donations may be given to the charity of your choice. His family and friends will miss his laughter and empathy. He will be sorely missed. Rest in peace, dear Andrew. Your bountiful, generous spirit forever fights on to inspire us.

I have worked with Andi`s mother over 50 years ago and still stayed in touch and would hear her talk about how excited she was when Andy would come usually at Christmas to visit. I haven´t been around him much since he was a child but I can remember him being entertaining My daughter and I met with him and his family at a cafeteria at Christmas when he was visiting Tennessee probably three years ago and then I had the privilege of talking to him at his mother`s graveside service I had no idea what kind of person he had become and I am so glad that I have a glimpse of his witt, intelligence and caring nature. Sally has been so strong to lose her mom and her only sibling so close together. She knows I love her.

Andrew was such a light and a beautiful soul! His laugh will live on in my mid as a cherished memory of meetings in early sobriety. Love you Andrew!

Andrew was a compassionate person with a commitment to the arts and to working for justice for all people. I am grateful to have called him a friend for many years. May we all carry on his work.

Andrew was a true gentleman. He was the rare person who had the sincerest and kindest confidence in himself to only add positive to any room he was in. He was always sincere, honest, and just the rarest of human beings. His heart was fully in his life and always for others and I learned so much from him. (He was also the most polite human being I've ever encountered!!)

You'll be missed terribly my friend. What a gift your life is.

Andrew was one of the first people to truly welcome me when I moved to Houston 20 years ago. His guidance and generosity were instrumental in shaping who I was becoming at that time. His kindness, wisdom, and friendship left a lasting mark on me-and to this day, in moments of both struggle and triumph, I still find myself wondering, "What would Andrew say?" He was a dear friend, and I know his presence had that same profound effect on so many others. I will miss his laughter, his rebellious spirit, and the deep compassion he showed to everyone around him.

This is a terrible loss-for his friends, for his community, and for all those whose lives he touched. The world feels a little less vibrant without him in it.

So truly "there" in every way and direction, that it would be easy to overlook his patient kindness that lingered even as he looked as if at any moment ready to break out into a sprint to arrive promptly for his next commitment. So proud to have been able to count on him as a friend.

I met Andrew at the Lambda Center in February 1995-both of us newly sober and trying to find our way. I´ll always be grateful I sat next to him that day. His humor was exactly what I needed, and his kindness made a lasting impact.

Andrew had so many remarkable qualities and touched more lives than he probably ever realized. What stands out most for me was how intently he listened. When Andrew listened, you felt heard-and that made you feel like you mattered. That was just one of his gifts: making people feel seen, valued, and important.

RIP my friend!

I´m so sorry for your loss. I am praying for you all. Please know that your loved one is safe in God´s memory (Proverbs 14:14,15). Just as he brought his son Jesus back to life, he will do the same for your loved one. May God give you comfort and strength to help you cope during this difficult time.

The moment we met over 30 years ago, his smile and amazing zest for life and all that´s right and good, fueled our friendship and commitment to advocacy. I am sad to learn of his death, but I witnessed the amount of life this one man brought to others! May Gods peace be with all who loved him and let that smile be a beacon of hope until we meet again! RIP Andrew!

To Andrew's Family,

We met at an arts conference in the early 2000s when he was at The Houston Ballet and I was at the Joffrey. It was "friends at first sight" and we've been in touch ever since. He was such a thoughtful, kind and empathetic man, and what a great listener!

His work for both arts institutions and the LGBTQ+ community is his great legacy. I know this loss leaves a great emptiness in your family.

May his memory be a blessing.

Andrew was such a magnificent person - tireless activist, true gentleman, and lover of the arts in any form. I first met him in the early days of ACT-UP (the activist group that protested policies and actions that were not supportive of those living with HIV), and rubbed shoulders with him in numerous ways over the decades. His passing is painful, and I will miss him so much.

I remember one day when I had my then infant daughter at work with me, Andrew saw us in the halfway and asked to hold her. My daughter just smiled. The look on both of their faces was priceless. She didn't take to very many men but loved Andrew. He was an angel. He will be truly missed.

Some of my favorite memories were peaking into Andrew´s office, which was across from my mother´s office, at the Houston Ballet. He always had such a beautiful smile on his face that I remember as a child. Now that I am an adult, I am truly inspired by his compassion for others and his long term sobriety. He lived his life in service work-how admirable. May he rest in peace. Andrew, you had a beautiful soul that will be deeply missed.
