WEST DUNDEE - David H. Gromer, 74, of West Dundee, died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2008, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born Oct. 6, 1933, on his father's 30th birthday, at Sherman Hospital in Elgin, to Herbert and Lillian (Demein) Gromer.

He grew up on his father's farm north of Carpentersville in Dundee Township. He graduated from Dundee Community High School in 1951. He served in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1958. On April 9, 1960, he married Cynthia Culp in Decatur.

He was a longtime member of the First Congregational Church of West Dundee. After he quit farming, he was co-owner and manager of the Fox Valley Rifle Range until its closing in 1999. He was a charter member and past president of the Dundee Jaycees. He was very active in Tri-Cities Little League, where he coached his sons while they were growing up. He was a former West Dundee police commissioner for many years. He was a loving husband and devoted father and grandfather. He enjoyed attending his grandchildren's sporting events. He was a lifelong auto-racing fan and followed both Indy and NASCAR racing.

He and his wife enjoyed wintering in Estero, Fla., the past several years with many visits from family and friends.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Cindy; their children, Steven R. (Lori) of Marengo, Richard H. of West Dundee, James C. (Heather) of Carpentersville and Jennifer M. (Eric) Dahl of Belvidere; his grandchildren, Kyle Gromer Dahl, Brittany, Katie and Nicholas Gromer and Alison Dahl; his brother, Robert (Randi) Rewoldt of Hebron; his sister, Judy Lang of Elgin; many nieces and nephews; and countless good and faithful friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his oldest son, Scott D. Gromer, on March 5, 1978; and his sister, Sandra Gromer Nolan, in 1995.

The visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, at Miller Funeral Home, 504 W. Main St., West Dundee.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, at the funeral home.

Burial will follow in River Valley Memorial Gardens in West Dundee.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to either the First Congregational Church of West Dundee, 900 S. Eighth St., West Dundee, or the Hospice of Northeastern Illinois, 410 S. Hager Ave., Barrington, IL 60110.

I was saddened to hear of Dave's passing. He was a good man, and he will be missed. I offer my deepest sympathy to his family.

I spent many a weekend years ago shooting at the range with such good friends as Bill McIntyre and Dave Letto.
