Dave Holz and I raced slot cars together in 1962 I went to my first drag race with him at Shepard raceway in 1963 I was 11 he was 12. We both got infected by drag racing quite early. My Dad filmed some of the racing with a 8mm camera.

Holz was a unique guy who was passionate about his interests and shared his enthusiasm with everyone. No matter who you were or what you drove, he always stopped to chat in the pits. He was an intrical part of the glue that made the Calgary racing community a family. A big personality whose absence will be felt by many.

I met Dave when I was 16 years old in the 70's. We shared time together following two interests, Camaro's and HO slot cars.
Dave was "Mr Hot lot" back in the days when car guys cruised down town on Friday and Saturday nights. Dave's knowledge of cars was endless, along with his tremendous memory and personality.
Dave was "the Guy" owning and bracket racing an iconic Orange w/white stripes 69 Z/28 complete with a "Super shifter", Hooker Headers, 302 cu/in and a M22 rock crusher. The performance and sounds that came out of that car were amazing as well as Dave's reaction time and drag racing skills.
Dave new everyone, his personality would light up a room once he started telling stories about cars and racing. There will never be another Dave Holz, he was very unique and will be missed by all who knew him.

I got to know Dave from hanging around Race City. Always quick to share a sharp comment. "Hey, why is it that your Smart car only has 3 lugs holding the wheels on, and a golf cart has 4, but the golf car is not Street legal..?"
Your knowledge and quick wit will be missed, however, I am still mad at you for filling the radiator on the Race City Ambulance with eggs and pepper to stop the leak the one race weekend. As I was the poor smuck that had to fix that unit the Monday after the weekend was done. You owe me a Timmy's in the next life when I catch up to you. Rest in Peace. Dean and Lynn Eide and Family

How very sad! I first met Dave many years ago at the Royalite Hot Lot Saturday nights. So many great memories. Even in that extreme group of characters, Dave was really hard to ignore. I will miss his big smile, big energy and big personality. Rest easy my friend ....

Dave Holz, my friend, was a happily complicated individual, a gifted special person who's story of brilliance, hilarity, comradery and buffoonery would fill several books, or become a five part movie saga. The only person who could play his part in such a venture would be....him.
Indeed, Dave's own fearless story of life would be worthy of an Academy Award. He was John Milner (American Graffiti), John Blutarski, (Animal House) and Colonel Frank Slade (Scent of a Woman), all rolled into one guy....
He moved though many genres in life, connecting with muscle car people, dog lovers, hobbyists, and so many more. Dave knew them all, and remembered details of every person he met, and retained everything related to the area of interest where he found himself in life.
He was the only customer ever of Pinnacle Peak in San Dimas, California to make the cooks worried they were making the portions too small.
He was the best wheel man we ever saw when he was rolling hard in his '69 Z/28.
Miss you Dave....I know wherever you are, you won't ever miss a shift.....and yes, "It sure has been a slice"

What can you say about Holz- a true original.he will be missed. He could supply details involved with many styles of racing by memory of something he read or probably he was there in some capacity - think drag racing mostly but he could talk your ear off about slot cars too. We will not see a guy like Dave come our way again. RIP. Dale and Cheryl Adams and family

I met Dave in the 70's through a common friend, Tim Dear. We had many laughs when Tim and Dave would show up at our place on Saturday mornings. The guys would talk about cars endlessly. i have many good memories and have often thought of Dave. I hope he and Tim are having a long awaited catch up. Rest in Peace Dave.
