David INGRAM Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province from Jan. 27 to Jan. 30, 2017.
INGRAM, David Laurence
Suddenly promoted to the Upper Chamber, following a heart attack at his home last weekend at age 76. David loved people – all sorts, sizes, ages, colours, ethnicities, from princes to paupers. That was David to the core. He cherished them all, throughout his life, cultivating their friendship as a gardener tends to his garden. He maintained lifelong friendships starting with those from Baron Renfrew Public School in Hogg's Hollow (Toronto) in the days of the horse drawn milk wagons, high school at UTS (including the Friday night poker games) and Commerce and Finance at U of T. Developing a path that would be more common for future generations, he set off to see the world, first as a CUSO volunteer in Ceylon, before backpacking through Asia, India, Africa and Europe. Upon his return he obtained his MBA at Harvard which led to his initiation into politics and Vancouver, working for a senior member of the Pierre Trudeau cabinet, Arthur Laing. As a lifelong bachelor he was able to set his own course and have genuine time for people. On moving to British Columbia, he became involved in business start-ups, politics at all levels and numerous public boards and projects. Family was most important to David and he took seriously the role he assumed at age 12 when his father died, as a paternal figure for his younger brothers. That integral role in the lives of Richard (Satoko) and Alan (Jenny) continued throughout his life. He was always the favourite uncle for his nieces, Emily, Kalen and Kelsey and his nephew David, who carries on his name. Despite the fact that they lived in the East, he never failed to make their high school graduations, university convocations or weddings. His frequent trips to his mother's birthplace in California created impromptu family reunions with numerous extended family members of the Smith clan. Many of his friends welcomed him into their families such that he was regularly included in their family celebrations, becoming a special "uncle" to their children, always willing to listen and share in their accomplishments. David loved his family, both immediate and extended; and they loved him back. He will be missed...but never forgotten. To our supportive confidant, tardy companion, chatty uncle and willing dinner guest, we toast a life well lived. Many hearts, young and old, left behind, are sad to miss out on more. David's life will be celebrated in Vancouver and Toronto when the flowers bloom. Messages can be addressed to the family through his nephew c/o David Ingram, 55 Deblaquire St. N., Port Hope, Ontario, L1A 4K7.

I was fortunate to have had time with David when I was visiting the LOVE organization in Vancouver. He was dedicated to LOVE (Leave Out Violence ) through his consistent support and encouragement. He made a difference in the lives of the youth that we served. He was outspoken, generous, intelligent and a man to be highly respected. To my dear friends Richard and Satoko Ingram I send my deepest of sympathies on the loss of your dear brother. With much love, Twinkle Rudberg

David liked to tell the story how we met... in Hong Kong many years ago when he was visiting there with his mother. Years later, after I moved to Vancouver, we reconnected again. He was a good friend and will be missed. My sincere sympathy to his brothers and their families.

I met Dave through a mutual friend, Jim Walker. They had been together in CUSO and travelled the world together. It was enlightening to hear their stories and perspectives on the world. I have no doubt that Dave will continue doing great things in another realm.

David thanks so much for making my life so much happier! Will you come back and cheer me up as you did almost daily with all your occurrences and care? I will keep dancing on the streets of Vancouver with the same joy and fun that you lived in it and shared with friends so generously! ! will continue to celebrate with all your friends that you introduced to me to! They are all marvellous persons. I will never drink as much coffee as you did but will enjoy conversation and care for people from all parts of the world as you did! What a wonderful person you were David! God must be having fun with you !

On behalf of all of us at Leave Out Violence (LOVE) Society BC, we are deeply saddened by David's passing. For 15 years, David's dedication as a board member supporting young people in Vancouver to overcome violence and become leaders in their communities will always be remembered. His humour and passion will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with David's loved ones.

To David's family, any words I might say would fall way short of being able to communicate my sorrow adequately. David was a special, valued friend ever since our days at UTS. You were truly unique, David, and we will never forget the joy, enthusiasm, intellectual insight, understanding and consideration you readily gave unselfishly to all.

David Ingram
A very good friend. Helpful in many ways as a friend and in business . Helped me start two companies and his advice was always meaningful and welcome. He was my friend for 11 years through thick and thin, good and bad, rich and poor. David was a great and honest confidant and I am pleased to have been his friend as he was to me. I met his brother several times I send my condolences to him.
I will miss David who was my breakfast at Granville Island, lunch and dinner companion in many of the best restaurants in Vancouvet, where he knew and was loved by the top owners and chefs in town. Coming to Vancouver without David there will not be the same.
He will be missed by all.
God bless you David, the best Canadian I knew.
Your really good friend Keith
