David Knight Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Mar. 9 to Mar. 15, 2008.
KNIGHT, David Died suddenly in Nelson, BC on February 26, 2008, aged 51, of a heart attack caused by complications due to diabetes. He grew up in Ottawa, Honeywood and Kincardine, ON. Dave moved to Winlaw, B.C. and lived there until his death. He leaves behind his beloved granddaughter Niya and beloved daughters Bryar & Sayre Knight. These three were the greatest joy of his life and he loved them immeasurably. He is survived, and sadly missed, by his beloved mother Audrey and stepfather Gerry O'Callaghan, father Jack Knight and stepmom, Elinor, sisters Lianne Dubreuil (Alain), and Jennifer Jones (Tony), brother Michael O'Callaghan (Debbie), former wives Trena Knight and Lynn Rubinstein, lifelong friend Bill Cameron, and many more. Lovingly remembered by nephews Ian, Sean, Kyle and nieces Taryn, Brittany, Jessica, Samantha, Lindsay and Amanda. He is also survived and missed by Dragonfly Farm, his neighbours in the West Kootenays, LRY (Liberal Religious Youth) and more. After family, community was David's central value. He left us too soon, but in 51 years David had more friends and adventures than most people ever will. Following a funeral home visitation and cremation in BC, celebrations of David's life will be held in B.C. and in McDonalds Corners ON at the MERA Schoolhouse on the afternoon of April 12, 2008. Donations can be made, in David's memory to Child Haven International and/or the Canadian Diabetes Association.

Dave was friend, lover, fellow LRYer, travelling companion, teacher, and a lifelong inspiration for me. The time I spent in Ottawa, living with him and his family during the summer of 1974, remains the highlight of my teenage years. My thanks to Bill C. for tracking me down to tell me of David's death and asking me to share my thoughts and memories in this guest book. My thoughts are with you all.

Deepest sympathy in the passing of David.
I remember playing with both he and Lianne in Ottawa. Audry and Jack were dear friends of my mother, Elizabeth, who passed in 2006.
Remembering one and all.

First, a correction (of my error, I wrote the original copy): Trena was not David's ex-wife; in fact, though long separated, they remained close friends and co-parents and were still married at the time of his passing. My apologies to my good friend Trena.

I guess the calendar says I met David in 1968, in Jr High Group (pre-LRY age youth) at First Unitarian in Ottawa. We experienced those teenage years together in Ottawa, Unicamp, Boston, Kitchener, you name it, and eventually were both founding members of Dragonfly Farm in Lake St Peter ON. He was a smart, energetic, complex person with considerable charisma, and he was a friend for life. He loved being a dad and eventually a grandfather, and his generous nature extended well beyond his family. Although we lived far apart, I was lucky enough to have some great visits with him in the past few years, and it's hard to believe I won't get another phone call starting "Hey, bud," followed by a plan to go skiing or road-tripping.

Sayre, Bryar, Niya, and all those who he loved: so sorry for your great loss. Cherish the memories, the pain will ease, and the love doesn't go away.

See you, bud. I'll be thinking of you.

love
Bill

I knew David from LRY. It is far too soon to lose someone like him. He will be missed.

David,

You were the best big brother I ever could have asked for. Life has been changed totally, but we are all remembering your life and how full it was. You have touched many hearts and for that you will live on forever.
I miss you,
Lianne
