David Mastroianni Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 28, 2024.
David Paul Mastroianni, 72, of Ellington, CT, died peacefully on February 24, 2024 surrounded by his daughters, after a courageous and often humorous journey with dementia. He was born July 15,1951 in Springfield, MA to his late parents Albert and Julia (Cwieka) Mastroianni. David attended Springfield Trade High School, where he played soccer, wrestled and ran track. He continued on to Springfield Technical Community College for his Associate's Degree and Western New England College for his Bachelor's Degree, both in Business Administration.

David devoted more than 35 years to Rice Packaging in Ellington, CT, where his daughters had the privilege of working alongside him and witnessing his dedication and strong work ethic. Transitioning to a new chapter, he proudly served as a TSA Officer at Bradley International Airport for several years until his well-deserved retirement.

David danced his way through life both figuratively and literally. He enjoyed running, bowling, playing softball, golfing, coaching, and traveling to visit family. He had a passion for carpentry, which was just one of many ways he shared his generous heart, helping family members with home projects and renovations. David never missed his daughters' sporting events, dance recitals, or any other special occasion that involved family and often could be spotted with a video camera on his shoulder to capture precious moments. In later years, he cherished his time spent with his eleven grandchildren, who affectionately called him "Papa".

He will be remembered most for the immense love and pride he had for his family. He is survived by his wife, Karen (Hansen) Mastroianni of Ellington, CT, his three daughters and their husbands: Ann and Samit Chhabra of Arlington, MA, Mary and Dave Sagendorf of Ellington, CT, and Ellen and Michael Bugbee of South Windsor, CT. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Taj, Jivan, Tyson, Caden, Asha, Kolby, Jacob, Colin, Livia, Brody, and Ronan, as well as six siblings and their spouses: Albert and Barbara Mastroianni of Agawam, MA, his twin brother Daniel and Francoise Mastroianni of Ooltewah, TN, Dominic and Kathy Mastroianni of Clearwater, FL, Richard and Susan Mastroianni of Birmingham, AL, Joanne and Thomas Avezzie of East Longmeadow, MA and Marie Mastroianni of East Longmeadow, MA as well has numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

David's memory is best honored with joy and laughter, rather than sadness and sorrow. Please join the family for a Celebration of Life on Saturday, March 9th, from 11 am - 2 pm in the Grand Ballroom at Georgina's, 275 Boston Turnpike, Bolton, CT. All are welcome to pay respects at anytime and join for lunch following a 12 pm tribute service. (Entrance for Grand Ballroom located around the back of the building through the garden area).

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to the "Family Care - Luke Mastroianni Fund" in support of David's beloved nephew who recently lost his battle with pancreatic cancer: https://pushpay.com/g/homewoodchurch (Select the option from the drop-down menu).

I am one of David's 2nd cousins, grandson of Tony and Margaret (Albert's sister). Time and tides washed the family in different directions. Remember David as tough, smart and devoted to family.

My deep condolences to Karen, his children, grandchildren, brothers and sisters.

My deepest and sincere condolences to the entire Mastroianni family. I first met Dave decades ago when our family lived directly across the street on Deerfield Lane where we participated in a variety of family and neighborhood activities. We met up again years later in our retirement years at Deer Valley Apartments where Dave could be seen daily walking countless miles around the neighborhood at a very youthful pace and would always stop to greet with a wide genuine smile, firm handshake and caring heart sharing memories along with our respective family updates. I truly share in your sadness on the loss of a real genuine hardworking dedicated and loving father, husband and Papa who left all too soon.

I only met Dave a few years ago but I will always remember his friendliness and quick smile. When running into him while walking he always had time to stop and chat. My sympathy goes out to his family. I know they have so many wonderful memories. May those memories give them peace during this difficult time.

Dave and I spent many hours watching our daughters play sports together. We spent sometime walking around the track near his home, sharing stories on our retirement. In earlier years, we worked together in the Ellington Athletic Boosters Club. I will always remember his infectious smile and laughter. Rest in peace my friend and my blessings to all of his family.

I am so glad that I had the opportunity to meet Dave. I know that I met him toward the end of his journey, but there were some very special moments when his sweet, sweet spirit shone through and brightened by day. The world is a better place because Dave was in it.

I didn´t know David, but of course, have known Richard and Marie since I was a teenager, heard about the family often over the years. Was saddened to hear of David´s passing, I´m so sorry.
I just had to say that it speaks volumes about your family to encourage donations to the family fund for Luke. That´s so selfless and thoughtful
