Jan. 22, 1933 - May 20, 2016
David G. Phillips, 83, of Sarasota, Florida died on Friday, May 20, 2016. David was born on January 22, 1933 in Kingston, Pennsylvania, and was the son of the late John R. and Cienwen Shadrach Phillips. He was predeceased by his beloved partner of 48 years, Paul J. Hayes.
During his high school days, David studied music, sang in choruses and was a guest soloist at various Welsh Festivals throughout the state of Pennsylvania. During this time he was Music Co-coordinator and Drama Director for his church. While attending high school he also studied music and theology at Wyoming Seminary. David received a music scholarship to attend Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas.
After college David located in New York City to pursue his career in music. He was accepted at The American Theatre Wing, and studied voice with Alexander Alexay of The Julliard School of Music. His career was interrupted when he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict.
Upon his honorable discharge David took a different path and embarked on a career in marketing and advertising in New York City. He started his career path with McCann Erickson and, prior to leaving New York, he was Associate Media Director with Daniel and Charles. He relocated to Philadelphia where he was employed at N.W. Ayer, and later became a partner in Lane, Golden, Phillips.
For the last 15 years of his career he was the Executive Vice President of Elkman Advertising where his major responsibility was the McDonald's Corporation Media for most of the Northeastern United States. He was recognized by the American Advertising Federation for his outstanding strategy in media planning. The highlight of David's career was receiving the McDonald's Marketing Achievement Award, during which time he served on the six-person McDonald's National Board of Media Directors.
David served on various Boards of Directors during his career and held the position of President for the Philadelphia Advertising Club for two years.
Upon retirement, he located to Sarasota, Florida and became an activist in the LGBT community. In 1995 he became a Founding Member of SunCoast Cathedral MCC where he served on the Board of Directors and held the position of Vice Moderator. He was installed as a Deacon in 2002. During his life in Sarasota he served as President of ALSO Out Youth, a member of the Unity Leadership Team, served for four years on the committee for Sarasota Pride, and a member of PFLAG and GAIN (Gulfcoast Affirming Interfaith Network).
In 1997 David joined the Gulf Coast Gay Men's Chorus, now known as Diversity: The Voices of Sarasota, where he held the position of President for two terms and three years as its Executive Director. He was an active member of Equality Florida and the Human Rights Campaign. He received recognition through various community awards for his steadfast dedication and faithfulness. David was honored by ALSO Out Youth (2009), Metropolitan Community Churches Ambassador Award (2003), SunCoast Cathedral MCC (2005), Church of the Trinity MCC (2008), Gulf Coast Men's Chorus and Diversity: The Voices of Sarasota (2013), Watermark Wave and Leadership Awards (2003), and Equality Florida (2009).
David was not only known for his love of music and his faith, but also for his exemplary professionalism. He was a loving, caring and dedicated man loved by many. He will be missed by his family, friends, and community. He was always there, reaching out to help others, and giving of his time and love in so many ways. All the lives touched by David will share the memory of his gifts forever. May he rest in peace.
David was predeceased by his brother Richard (Chick), and sister Audrey Cavan. Dear David - Today would have been your 84th birthday... Before your last surgery you said what a full life you had had & that there were no regrets. You weren't one to measure what others had or had not done, but what you were able to do for others. You did not let anyone or any organization down; always there to support, guide, entertain, uplift & inspire, and to provide pure love. So many of us benefited from your quiet, selfless leadership. Few folks like you. Please know that I miss your being on the other end of that phone line. There is comfort knowing that God has brought you home & that you are together with Paul. I'm holding on to all those life's questions I have til we meet again....

David was always there for anyone who needed his help or advice especially those in the Philadelphia Ad community. He was selfless in giving his time to anyone who needed it. David was one of the most respected people in the industry among his clients as well as his clients. They don't make them like David anymore. He is missed

It was always a joy to see David at an event. He was a supporter of so many of his fellow performers in the community and often became an "agent" for us!

He will be greatly missed.

David hired me when he first opened his agency in Philadelphia and it was a wonderful experience for me. David was the consummate media professional, fair and very funny. We shared a lot of laughs together over the years and Paul joined right in! I even tried to get David to go into business with me in the later years.
When David and Paul moved to Florida I
didn't see them but I often thought about the good times we had together. They don't come any better. He will be missed.

Dear David - you impacted so many people during your marvelous life and career. Quiet guidance by example & very high standards, always tempered with a lot of love.
Your great sense of humor, gracious smile, boundless spirit & principled dedication will stay with me always.

Thank you for standing up for so many, for giving of yourself so selflessly & for the significant role you played in guiding my life.
The beauty of your voice never faltered. It rings out most joyously from heaven, with Paul and the angels by your side.

My life would not have been complete if I had not met David when I joined The Gulf Coast Men's Chorus in 2000 and continued to sing with them throughout the years. Like David, I had served on the board of directors and always looked to him for guidance as did many. He was always so kind and considerate of others. My husband Duvan and I have enjoyed many years knowing David. We have spent many outings together whether at our house for dinner, birthdays, pride celebrations, or even going out for a night on the town we could always count on David to be there. We will always cherish our time together my dear friend. Love always and forever.....

Life blessings come in all shapes and sizes. Friendships too. Dave Phillips and Paul were among the most precious and trusted friendships of our lifetime. No pretense, no secret agendas, no hidden thoughtsjust pure, open, heart-felt friendship. John and I built a quick, early friendship with Dave & Paul when they lived in the Philadelphia area. We skied together in the winter (or certainly tried to!), we rented a huge Lincoln Continental one summer and drove together to Provincetown and stayed in the same room at the Boat Slip, we visited friends in Fire Island another summer, and we visited them in Florida several times when David's cousin Richard was still alive. We always had a blast, never held back on emotions, and shared our various visions of a better, brighter future someday. After Paul passed, we shared Dave's deep sorrow and loss and talked fondly of our amazing past. But David's focus on the future, of making a better world for the next generation never slowed. Our respect and love for him (and Paul) will never end. In our last phone conversation a few weeks ago, it was like nothing had ever changed. David was Davidsame sense of humor, same sharp memory, same beautiful spirthe was just hanging out in a body that was failing him. So rest in peace beautiful manthank you for teaching us how to be proud, to love, to live, and to be great friends. Jim & John

Oh My David. I met you when I volunteered for an Organization, You were sitting in the back of the Jeep when they pick me up at my home. In that one hour ride we knew that we would be friends. We did not know that we would be more then friends we would be family. We did not know then that for the next 50 years you and Paul and Jerry and I would always be part of each others lives.
We will miss you and Paul every day for what time remains of our lives.
We will always love and cherish you both.

I shall miss David dearly. Though our Friendship lasted a brief four years before his passing it was a rich Friendship that I Treasure.....

May 25, 2016

It's been many years since I have worked with David at Elkman Advertising. And many years since we have seen each other. But fortunately, I saw him last year at Jim Gallagher's recognition by the PhillyAdClub. (Or was it two years ago?) I didn't know David was attending and was so happy to see him. Huge hugs. An old friend and co-worker, whose fair and even tempered personality, I always admired. Our clients loved David. It had been forever since David attended an advertising event in Philadelphia, and we joked about neither of us knowing too many of the younger people. David looked about the same to me, with his warm and inviting smile. David loved the ad business, but always mused about opening his hot dog stand in a warm weather climate. I wasn't the first David Lane that David worked with. He co-owned his own agency with the "other" David Lane, and Alvira Golden. The agency, Lane Golden Phillips, was a successful independent regional agency, representing many local blue chip accounts. I feel David and his agency helped to set the foundation for other independent local agencies like ours. I will miss knowing that David is still around. I know many of you will, as well. We've all been richer for knowing David, and I am looking forward to reading other memories of my old friend and co-worker.

He will always have a special place in our hearts and we will treasure the great memories together. We find peace in knowing he is reunited with Paul and our beloved grandfather Chick.
