David Roberts Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 9, 2012.
David Lee Roberts, 66, passed away in Houston, Texas on March 8, 2012. He was born on September 23, 1945 to parents Morris Leman Roberts and Mary Ella Bryan in Odessa, Texas.

A committal service will take place at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Road, San Antonio, Texas on Thursday, March 15, 2012 at 9:00 am. The United States Marines will render Military Honors.

Friends and family are invited to attend a Memorial Celebration/Openhouse at Millards Crossing, 6020 North Street Nacogdoches, Texas on Tuesday, March 13, 2012 from 4:00 pm -6:30 pm.

David will be remembered as a wonderful son and a loving, supportive dad. His daughter, Susan remarks, "David Lee Roberts, was a big man, a great big one." He loved his girls, different though they are. His pride in his family was never-ending, including his devoted ex-wife. He has ridden on his Honda all across America trying to find a place where he belonged, but he always returned to East Texas. It was the trees, forever green under all circumstances.

David was like an evergreen, full of life til the end. His biggest weakness was peanut butter, turning his daughter into a peanut butter Nazi for his own good, (hiding it in her room). Dave's greatest loves were women; his wife, his daughters, his mother, the sister he had for a few weeks, and all of the unique women he's held, kissed, and loved.

His talents were endless, singing, drawing, sculpting, wrestling, acting , building, writing, and yet he could not dance. He was too many things to say but every chance he got he would tell you a story. And he never forgot to tell you he loved you. He had a deep love for the water. He loved ships, sailboats, history and pirates. He was a Corporal in the United States Marine Corps and proudly served our country from 1965 to 1969 during the Vietnam Conflict. He earned the Purple Heart Medal and the unfailing respect of his comrades and family. He was an expert marksman in the Marines and volunteered for two additional tours, expressing that he felt that his mission was not complete.

He was a man who put others first in his life every day. He loved to cook, fish, take road trips, and make his daughters feel important. He was always proud of his children and grandchildren. He loved art, particular sculpture, and making special things for his daughters. He will be greatly missed by those who knew him best.

He is preceded in death by his father Morris Leman Roberts. He is survived by his daughters, Bonnie Anne Roberts of Corpus Christie and Susan Alexandra Roberts of Nacogdoches; and their mother, Mary Corbett of Nacogdoches; grandchildren, Henry, Xander, Maxwell, Brooke; mother, Mary Ella Johnston and husband Johnny of Alabama; brother, John Roberts and wife Linda of Canyon, Texas and many nieces and nephews and dear friends.

Memorial donations may be made to the Fisher House, Building 3623, George C. Beach Road, Ft. Sam Houston, Texas 78234-6200, to assist veterans families.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction and care of Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Directors.
