David Roos Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 14, 2025.
August 2, 1960 - December 7, 2024

Beloved husband and family member David Roos passed away peacefully with family by his side, in his home on Oahu, Hawaii from effects of cancer that he had been battling for two years. David was born August 2, 1960 to Jack and Sharon Roos, in Pittsfield, MA and moved as a family to Washington State in 1963. He graduated from Bellevue High School in 1979, and went on to earn BS degrees in Crop Science and Plant Pathology from Oregon State University, a Masters in Divinity from Yale Divinity School, and a Masters in Clinical Psychology at the New School in New York City. He met the love of his life, Suwatcharee (Art) Santawisidh in Hawaii in 2008 and they married in 2012 in Vashon, WA, near the beach house where David spent childhood summers with his family. He loved their home on Oahu and they enjoyed much excursioning around Hawaii, and regular trips to Washington to see family. David dedicated himself as a mental health counselor in Queens, NY and then as a counselor to at-risk youth in Hawaii Public Schools. He worked for the last 16 years in finance, first in sales and then as a compliance officer, with Guardian Investments and WestPac Wealth Partners.

David pursued passions at different points in his life that included high school distance running, mountain climbing in the Pacific Northwest (summiting Mt. Rainier in his 20s), surfing in Hawaii, gardening in the cherished "outback" of his home, where he grew many tropical fruits and vegetables, and ongoing reading in philosophy, literature, and theology.

He is survived by his wife Suwatcharee, his parents Jack and Sharon Roos, and his three siblings, Tim (spouse Debra, Port Angeles), Steve (spouse, Hazel, Seattle), and Kristin (spouse, Nicholas Briejer, Tacoma) and six nieces and nephews. He was a role model of tremendous impact in the family for his empathy for those living with hardship. His co-workers in finance held heart-felt respect for his work ethic that was helpful, positive, wise, and personal. He will be missed for his boundless curiosity, and fun-loving nature, and his constant encouragement. A celebration of life will be held at Wedgwood Presbyterian Church, 8008 35th Ave NE, in Seattle, WA on February 1, 2025, at 2:00. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the Hawaiian Humane Society, hawaiianhumane.org.
